It sounds to me like your amp has a very serious problem, and just trying to warm it up won't do anything. The amp should be "on" within seconds of turning on the "on/off" switch, without any hesitation, crackling or anything else of the sort. The seller should work with you, but as others have often found out, purchases on ebay (I'm assuming that's where you got the amp, though I'm not sure) are fraught with risk.

Your last resort will be to contact Adcom (even though Emerson now owns them) and find a service center to check out the amp. In that case, be prepared to spend a few hundred dollars. I don't know what you paid for the amp, but if it's less than $500, and you have to spend another $300 to get it fixed, you're still ahead of the game.

Good luck!

If he will work with me my intention is to get a hold of Glenn (Echowars) and see if he will take her in and perform some of his magic on her.

Emerson does not own Adcom. They are forming a joint venture, i.e. a third company that Emerson owns the majority share of, and Adcom has a minority share. Reread the press release, and also see my comments in that thread.

Just read your comments on that thread. Well done, and well said. Still, the two go together like Ham and Passover...

Emerson once "distributed" H.H. Scott products. Everything under the "Scott" name was second-rate junk, and eventually, Emerson, quite unceremoniously, pulled the plug, and Scott disappeared forever. I surely hope nothing of the sort happens to Adcom.

So far the seller is ignoring my emails since I intially let him know I wasn't satisfied. Ebay won't allow me to start a dispute yet, it must be 10 days or more after the purchase. I don't know how this will come out but I don't like the way it is going, I might have a very expensive boat anchor. But at least it is a heavy one. biggrin.gif

That's really a terrible shame. Buying from eBay is always risky, and spending hundreds of dollars (I assume) for something that doesn't work is awful. I've made only two purchases from them: one for a Dual 721 which arrived filthy, with shredded and loose cables, and a defective AT cartridge. Fortunately for me, I had a fairly decent cartridge collection, additional cables. and a good supply of
Windex.

The second was my CS-5000 which was packaged superbly, each and every additional item packed separately, and even the paper overhang adjustment sandwhiched between two pieces of heavy cardboard so as not to get damaged. "Flawless" is the only description I can use for the manner in which the seller shipped the item, and I sent him an email to tell him so.

I hope eBay itself somehow comes to your rescue. Right now, your amp is, as you put it, "an expensive boat anchor," but after it's repaired, and hoping that such a repair won't break the bank, I suspect you'll have a stunning performer. My GDA-5800 certainly is!

Good luck.

Good luck Jim.

My hope is to get a little restitution, then send it to Echoowars, he should be able to make her sing right again, just don't know at what cost, I already have $677 in her.

I have done a lot on Ebay, only ever had a couple of bad experiences, when you do have a bad one it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Still nothing from the seller. I did get a message back from Glenn, he suspects caps leaking. I am going to take the top off today and shoot some pics, if I find what I expect I am going to forward some of the pics to the seller, maybe that will convince him, I wonder right now if he doesn't think I am trying to scam him or something.

I was just reading over on another site that the failure rate for the capacitors in the 565 and the 585 is 100%, so I guess it was inevitable. I wish I had read that a couple of weeks ago.

If it proves to be a dead capacitor, the previous owner certainly noticed some kind of malfunction just as you did, Jim. That surely didn´t happen while in transit.

Why would a seller with 100% rating hide something like that is beyond me. soundt/confused-smiley-013.gif

Based on that, Echowars can give you an estimate, right? You can try and get a compensation from the seller based on that.

Maybe not. If there's any kind of "liquid" in the caps, they may have been near going kaput, and the sub-freezing exposure in transit might have triggered the whole thing.

Just a thought.

I'm a little late to this topic, but i concur with Larry.
I mean, electrolytics caps are also either affected by low or high temperatures.
If the electrolyte freezes (it must be pretty cold since the glycols and
such depress the freezing point), the capacitor quits working.

Oh- it was the Superquads- I forgot that I already paid you for them and shipping/handling.

When can I expect them?

The Adcom you have is a beast- and once running again, is going to be quite impressive.

Let's hope the repair is both quick and cheap.

And sorry to hear your eBay woes.
