If it proves to be a dead capacitor, the previous owner certainly noticed some kind of malfunction just as you did, Jim. That surely didn´t happen while in transit.

Maybe not. If there's any kind of "liquid" in the caps, they may have been near going kaput, and the sub-freezing exposure in transit might have triggered the whole thing.

Just a thought.

I'm a little late to this topic, but i concur with Larry.
I mean, electrolytics caps are also either affected by low or high temperatures.
If the electrolyte freezes (it must be pretty cold since the glycols and
such depress the freezing point), the capacitor quits working.

You´re probably both right. I never even knew caps had glycol in them.

Another day lived, another lesson learned. soundt/action-smiley-035.gif

The electrolyte is usually boric acid or sodium borate in aqueous solution together with various sugars or ethylene glycol which are added to retard evaporation. wink.gif

I opened her up yesterday and shot some pictures, wehn I get home today I will try to get them uploaded. I noticed on the circuit boards what looks to me rust some of the solder joints, I don't see any other evidence of caps leaking but I may not be looking correctly. Glenn has put me on the list, I figure if not now it would have been and eventuality anyway as I find in more and more places that eventually the caps will fail, maybe finding it now may be ahead of the game, soundt/confused-smiley-013.gif I do suspect that the seller knew something to suggest a 20 minute warmup for the unit.

If you can't wait for glen, my good friend Dave, an AK member by the moniker Grateful, is deemed an expert on Adcoms by his peers.

He does all my work and is more than fair.

Even glen has acknowledged Dave's ability with an Adcom.

just let me know...

Thanks Paul, I have already been in touch with Glenn and have it in line for him to do his magic on it.

I have resigned to the fact that no matter which 585 I would have boughten unless someone had already had it recapped I would be having this expense. that is what a guy gets for not researching thouroughly enough.
