I just finished the other day--

1. draw plans
2. plane wood, cut wood, build cab
3. seal and stain
4. STRIP off all the previous finish with a new sander, as it looked terrible due to crappy sanding.
5. apply 2 coats of minwax pre-stain sealer
6. stain (2 coats) with varathane "colonial maple"
7. put on 2 coats of Minwax Polyurethane

and, I'm done!!

(well--except for one a couple steps--ordering the glass doors and covering the inside-sides with velvet--you can see in the pics the terrible job I did on them!)

Sofar, it is built to fit 5 setton components plus the front loading turntable.

My big problem is this: the 5 components I have there aren't very safe stacked--they wobble back and forth a lot when you push. I suspect having all setton stuff there instead of the tape deck and CDP still won't help that much.

I may end up making a separate shelf for each setton piece--only problem with this is that I won't be able to fit 5 settons in there! sad.gif
I will probably take the smaller space and fit my CDP in it if it works out.

Let me know what you think!
thanks!

Wow! Veeeerrrry nice. I will keep that "formula" handy in case I ever try something like that myself.

you need to get everything level, but i dont have any bright ideas on the best way to go about that part.

Henry,

You really do need some extra shelves in that rack. They will provide extra stifness overall, and cooling to each component.

Awesome woodworking skills you have.

Jorge: that's my next project!

Thanks!!!

Looks great but I agree, make shelves for each component.

Definitely needs shelves. Does it rock on the floor or does the box rock?

the cab itself is as solid as a rock. It doesn't rock on the floor at all, but the stuff that's in it is what rocks!!

I stuck my 67-pound 16.5 on the top(which amde it VERY topheavy) and it still seemed to be just fine, no wobbles. Carpet floor, too!

On rereading I can better see what you said. It just looked to solid to wobble. If I were low man on the totem pole I'd want a shelf. Nice setup nonetheless.

Fundamentally, an audio component rack is meant to provide a good level of isolation and vibration control. It's supposed to eliminate, or more likely reduce, harmful vibration throughout your audio system.
IMHO you did precisely the opposite. ohmy.gif
Not surprisingly, many of the tweaks in the industry deal with controlling vibration.
Sorry, but IMO it's indeed very good for the eye, but very bad for audio.

Don't worry, sirs, I will build separate shelves for each component!

I will also put padding between the shelfs and shelf-holder-thingeys to further isolate vibration.

you can level with spikes. you do need some vetalation.
but it does look nice. you have a talent with wood. that is something alot dont have.
i buy kits then fight with putting them together.
my kudos to you.
