I always wanted one, but never had the cash or space to get one. just another cool factor, when I was in the airforce a room mate had 747 think it was a pioneer, but did it sound nice, wow.

I have 4

Pioneer RT-707 in my main system

TEAC 1230 in the office system

TEAC 1250 wedged under a bench

AKAI M-8 tube which is waiting for the rest of the tueb system to find a place to rooste.

I have been buying up tape and getting ready for next winter when I want to record about 200 LP's to tape at 7.5ips with the Pioneer.

I got almost 52 reels of Maxell UD or LN 35-90 and 7) reels of 5" Maxell UD 35-90 (900') (I'm rolling this myself from 10.5 reels of tape I bought.

And I have 17 NOS Reels of BASF LP-35 and about a half dozen reels of other good tape.

By the end of the summer I should easily have the stock pile I want.

I even have labels and cover art designed for some of the recordings.

NOW if I could just find a place for another shelf of music!

Jim, a good friend of mine surprised me with one as a gift. I located him some Bozaks a bit back.

Really fun unit, but I'll admit it can be a pain in the arse.

The sound quality is very fluid and warm, sometimes a bit too much for my personal liking.

But this is due to how the tapes were recorded- 4 albums per 7" reel. I'd have to say the way to go is an album per 7" reel, and higher speed taping- 7.5 to 15 ips.

I've been spending some time listening to tapes given me, and at some point will record a few of my albums.

I like it better than cassette, but not as much as records or CDs.

Perfect for spinning holiday tunes at christmas, or Neil Diamond covers while snorting heroin. Oops- sorry- that last one was a scene from Pulp Fiction. My bad....

I've got an Akai GX-600DB, which I purchased way back in 1975. It was one of the few reel to reel decks that has built-in Dolby B noise reduction. It still works, but not especuially well: most of the pots and switches are now very noisy. and any recording I make on it results in the left channel sounding noticeably duller than the right. Still, sometimes (though rarely) I'll dig out an old tape I made and use it for background music.

My favorite use of a tape deck was to take select tracks of various records or CD's, and compile a tape of many assorted songs and instrumentals. Making such a recording took forever, especially since the playback time at 7 1/2 ips on a 10 1/2" reel is 90 minutes per side. Most of the recordings of this type that I made on the unit, decades ago, are still listenable, but don't come close to the sound of a new CD on my la-*test*-('") toy, the Marantz SA-8001 SACD player.

If there were a local shop where I could take the Akai for a fix, I'd probably do that, but there isn't one, and packing it up and shipping it would cost a fortune, given its size and heft.

Some younger folks have come to my house, and spotted the Akai along with the rest of my components, and asked, "What is THAT?" never having seen one before. Boy, and I OLD!

I get that from my kids when I am playing an album, they will say, dad is playing the big cd's again.

Ed, I have an Akai that needs the pots cleaned, maybe I will do a pictoral, I dodn't have the knowledge for a head alignment though, I will see if I can find one though and work from there. First I need to check which Akai I have.

I have the service manual and such for one of the Teacs, I will check and see about sharing it.

Good news for Reel to Reel lovers:

The Tape Project: Reel-to-Reel Audiophile Albums.

The Tape Project was founded to bring "master tape sound" into the living room. Each release is recorded onto 1/4" half track analog reel-to-reel tape at 15 inches per second. They claim, "You just aren't going to get any closer to the original master, short of buying a record label or two."

The current catalog consists of 10 hand-picked albums, including Sonny Rollins' seminal Saxophone Colossus (1956), Bill Evans' Waltz for Debby (1961), along The Robert Cray Band and Malcolm Arnold conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra. There's even a brand new album by Jacqui Naylor that was mastered exclusively for The Tape Project.

The process starts by creating a 1" duplication master from the original analog master tape, which is then dubbed to a bank of finely tweaked Ampex ATR-100 decks. The result is the highest-quality "home format" analog copy possible.

The Tape Project is the brainchild of Dan Schmalle, who is also the driving force behind Bottlehead Corp, who manufacture a range of well respected tube amplifiers and modifies tape decks with the CCIR/IEC1 playback equalization required to play these tapes.
