Even with the rat shack ICs and ghetto cables I'm using....WOW. Top to bottom sonic layering. No need for a sub anymore. I didn't realize how much power tweets can eat though. I am really enjoying the arrangement. New cables, my NAD amp and a passive pre will help and come in short order. Highly recommended. I never knew how good my speaks were until now. Will never go back to a single amp again.

When I passively bi-amped my vandersteens, there was a stark separation in the lows, mids and highs, I too will never go back.

unfortunately its a condition forced on all of us i'm afraid (purposefulness, not phd's). i try to suppress it whenever i can and thats where music is a great help.

The phd is supposed to negate purpose. (P)iled (H)igh and (D)ry. Now I am considering becoming a deputy director. not sure how much bossing around i want to do.

elroy,

that's exactly what I'm hearing.

you'd also be looking continuosly looking for work till you got tenure or left your research area. part of the lack of purpose aspect.

Jorge,

How do you use a active cross with speaks that have passive crosses already hardwired? Can you?  I am really thrilled this is working with my moderately priced setup.

-Anthony

Disconnect the two pairs of wires running from the crossover to each driver ( assuming it´s a 2-way ) as well as the cables leading from the speaker terminals at the back pannel. Leave the cables hanging from the crossover PCB, this way it will be easy to revert to the original configuration anytime you want.

Get a cheap frequency adjustable two way electronic crossover, preferably with a 24 DB / octave slope. You can get new ones for less than $100 thewse days.

Get the active croosover connected between your pre and two power amps. Run the outputs from the power amps directly to each driver.

Simple, right? biggrin.gif

Why do AR-3As have three posts?
I believe one serves the tweet and mid, and the other covers the woofer.
Can you bi-amp them from the outside through standard speaker connections (the construction doesn't seem to welcome opening the cabs, anyway).
A. if it is for biamiping, what's the preferred wiring pattern
B. If not what's the advantage of three posts?

i didnt have to push either one as hard. i had morel tweeters and vifa 8 inch woofer. i used a first over xover so there wasnt any components to color the sound. yes it sounded better. the cops came cause at half they heard them 2 blocks away.
