polk...ahhh- 03-11-2008
I am about to be delivered a couple of new Polk rti12's and plan to bi-amp them. I have a Denon POA-5200 120wpc dual monoral I think should be used for the lows, and a Denon AVR-5700 140wpc ht reciever for the highs and rest of the home theater.
does anyone have any experince with these amps\speaks to give me some advice? I would like advice in general too. like should I use( is there a benifit) to useing an EQ for the highs...or even the lows? how do you adjust for volume when you bi amp...by ear? i guess huh. should I get a pre-amp ( the denon has pre-outs but volume is dependant on one source)

is 140wpc gonna blow the polks highs if I run the 120wpc dual monarul for the lows and really crank it? in other words, how can I best adjust the volumes for the highs and lows independantly? soundt/doh.gif

How about wires? I have some 12awg monstor super flat and just plain old 14awg, and I only am runnig about 6 feet. what is there better that is noticable.

anyway, perhaps too many question for one topic. but it is only one topic to ME.

THANKS!

when using two different amps to bi-amp, the more powerful amp typically is used to drive the woofers. in my limited experience i have found that this configuration gives the best results sound-wise. nothing wrong with trying it both ways though. i have no experience with the Polk rti12, but (again, in my limited experience with bi-amping) i know of no speaker that doesnt benefit from bi-amping.

as for the equalizer, again there is no harm in trying it out to find the best possible sound. the way the room is configured and the equipment set up will play the biggest factor here. whether it helps or not is going to depend on the room, the synergy between your components and your ear.

i would use the pre-outs on the AVR to feed the POA and wait until i heard this configuration before deciding if i wanted to invest in a pre-amp. i suppose you could use the equalizer to help balance any disparity in gain levels ... not sure how well it would work for this though.

i would guess that the 12awg Monster wire would give better results than 14awg, but you wont know for sure until you try.

sounds like you are going to have a killer setup when the Polks arrive. i'm looking forward to your results with everything.

If you want flabby bass, put the least powerful amp with the woofs. Be careful, I've had mixed results trying with bi-amping. Choice of speaker cables does help here. I have tubes on my tweets and SS on my woofs.

What really will dictate which amp goes with woofs/tweets will be the sensitivity of the woofer/tweeter networks. Put the more powerful amp with the least sensitive network. Since both of your amps are similar in power, I don't think it will matter.

Your cables will make a difference.I'll put this as gentally as I can. Run from Monster run very fast. I agree with the 12awg with the power you are running. If you are running 6ft lengths there are some very good cables out there that won't break your piggy bank.
I do like Audio Magic not just because I sell them but because they do make a difference.
