This one is for the experienced sellers amongst us. I have a couple of repeat customers who have become buddies. And, I enjoy helping them with their audio addiction. Today, I was giving a demo of small speakers based on size requirement. Instead of closing the deal, I mentioned the limitations of small speakers and suggested a bigger pair of speakers. Better speakers need a better amp so I took back a receiver I had sold him earlier. I set him up with a Sansui AU-717 and Yamaha NS-200M. While I am stuck again with not so good speakers and a receiver, I'm much happier for bringing audio happiness.

happiness is in the ears of the beholder. just give them what they want. make small suggestions and don't force feed. if they leave happy then i'm happy. if you really love music then just getting a smile when they hear their new components is enough. don't get me wrong a profit is nice.

I spent a couple hours showing gear this afternoon. Didn't make very much for my effort and some would say it's not worth the effort. However, I enjoyed the demo and that is priceless in my book.

i set my sister up with a vintage system, Wharfedale W-60D speakers, Luxman D-113 cdp and a Pioneer SA-7100 integrated. all the pieces are rough around the edges but they sound very nice together and she is simply delighted with it. yeah, i get a big kick out of seeing a new owners happy smile when they spin their favorite disk.

you should hear the wharfes i rebuilt. the owner was blown away.

Of course audio is a very specific business with a lot of subjectivities but, my uncle was on sales for many years and i remember a phrase or two he was constantly remembering to my hunt. This is what he said:

Remember, always listen to a customer. Never impose your personal tastes to a customer. Listening is the secret.
