i know this subject has been beat like a dead horse. well here goes. i changed out my cables on my creek solid states. well when i pulled the tara labs off of the tuner to the amp and the speaker wire to the audio magics. well i thought my epos 16s wre just hard to burn in. when i changed the cables the speakers opened up my wife even noticed the difference in the sound she was impressed and so am i. i havent burned them in yet but i couldnt believe the difference it made.

IMHO, cable matters.
Better cables = lower resistance = less impedance variation = better speaker response.

Although I am cable sckeptic, I have heard differences in cables, particularly speaker cables. What I have never experienced is the so called cable burn-in effect. Maybe it is there and I´m just deaf.

I will admitt, however, that just like tube rolling, cable roling is a very entertaining part of our hobby.

IMO, more than the cables themselves, the more important is how they are arranged behind your rack. For a glimpse of what I mean, search Mark W.´s Piooner shrine. Absolutely amazing tidiness and sound cable routing that should be a lesson to us all. High and low voltage carrying cables should be as far apart as possible from each other, and that does make a difference, sonically.

well it could be the conductor. audio magic are silver cables. less resistance.

In extremely long speaker cables the lower resistance of silver could possibly show some differences. I doubt it would be noticeable in 10"-20" runs of cables, though. More likely different inductance or capacitance values which mate better to your speakers. Even that is highly arguable in the context of audio frequencies and usual lenghts used in a domestic environment.

Be that as it may, let me throw you a challenge, Larry.

Find a way of carrying out proper double blind listening -*test*-('")s. Use the same -*test*-('") rig for both cables, and remember that you have to ensure replay levell loudness is "ALLWAYS" exactly the same. That is the real -*test*-('"), and you´d be surprised at how difficult cables are to tell apart under those circumstances.

As I said, I believe there are differences, but in a much smaller scale than most people would have you believe.

Yes, I´m talking about several K$ rip Off´s out there. My very affordable Audioquest Midnight II´s stood amazingly well against a few much, much more expensive competitors, which thus failed to dethrone said Audioquests from my system.

what im going to do is put them on my tubes. one side tara labs the other side audio magic. ill do it tomorrow and see what happens then. thats how ive done it before and just switch from one side to the other.

hifi_nut- 01-15-2008
Larry,

Check our thread " Believing is hearing".

I´m sorry to insist, but for credible results it´s gotta be a blind -*test*-('"), with perfectly calibrated output levells, meaning you must engage someone to do the cable swaping for you.

If you know in advance which is which, you´ll be driving yourself unintentionally into a falacy / trap. That is unavoidable, no matter how golden-eared you may be.

Anyway, if you do carry out the left - right comparison as you intend to, make sure to engage the "Mono" button in your amp, if it´s got one. Many stereo recordings have quite different contents on each channel, and that won´t help in your proposed method.

Please keep us posted on your findings. Oh, and above all, have a great time. I wish I could be there to do the cable swaping for you. smile.gif

i'VE GOT A FRiend coming Sunday to do the swapping for me.

hifi_nut- 01-16-2008
Well, I´ve found some pages that seem to support my beliefs that speaker cables are the ones that can make a bigger difference under certain circumstances, whereas Interconnects much less so, if at all.

My advice to you Larry, as one who´s been there done that before, is to be very, very prudent before you fork out your hard earned cash.

I'm a dealer for Audio Magic. So I'm not shelling out big bucks. I just want to be able to sell them with a straight face when i say how good they are.

I´m glad to hear that. I would never expect you to act in any other way, anyway, though I hadn´t realized untill just now you were a dealer for Audio Magic. soundt/thumbup.gif

I´m sorry if I gave you a pessimistic impression. I do carry on, at times.

I´m even more eager to learn about your findings and conclusions, now. smile.gif

do you know what a pessimist is? a person who has lived. you werent pessimistic. ive got 4 speaker wires to try. 2 different interconnects. so we will see. Sunday.

dingus- 01-17-2008
looking forward to Sunday's results!

An optimist is a person who looks forward to marriage.

A pessimist is a married optimist.

Those the GF cables ?

Over at the GF site, I've just started up a cable demo, like the B-283. Rachel's rules is I have to do them from our site. That common sense thing of it's time to have traffic in our own forum too smile.gif

Pro or con on Cables, this is a chance to explore it for the first time or again.
