I use Stax for my personel listening when using cans, I am currently in the market for a set of cans for my wife to use at her office, Stax are out of the question for use with a boom box and or TV, I don't think she would appreciate the differnce anyway.

I am currently looking at either a pair of Sennhieser HD280's or a pair of Denon D1001's. Does anyone have any experience with these? Opions welcome and invited. I have checked on Head Fi, but would like to see what is the opinions here.

does she want an open ear type? they might be better suited for a work environment and they are typically more comfortable due to their lighter weight.

No, she wants closed ear type, more noise canceling.

never tried Denon headphones and the only Sennheiser's i had were a wireless set that sounded ok until they developed a constant buzz. anyway i take it that by this ..

you are looking for something of decent quality, in which case i would go with the cheaper candidate.

Hey, Jim.

I use headphones every day at work. My work set is Yamaha, and I like them for music or voice work. I've also used and owned some nice Sony. I've never had or used a bad pair of Sennheiser. If I ever actually went out shopping for headphones, one of my top criteria would be STURDINESS. I have one pair of Senns that is compromised at the point where the wire enters the headphone casing, and a sweet-sounding pair of Sonys that just disintegrated. Lots of headphones sound good, but they ain't worth squat if one of the earpieces has snapped off, or the cord has become unusable. From this perspective, over-the-ear cans are more likely to not fall to pieces, so that works well with your quest.

Scott you are correct, I am looking for quality in the build as doctorbongo adds to this, both of the cans are over the ear products. I am not saying she can't hear but sound quality is not as important to her as it is to me.

I am going to make an offer on the Sennhieser pair. they look fairly durable, not like the old Koss head wieghts of years ago, but those you couldn't wear for the day either.

I opted for the Sennheiser's, I'll report how they sound and look.

I liked my AKGs; but at 300.00 it's a little much.
