I have been messing with a Dual 505-2, no sound output, I went through all of the usual, checked and cleaned the SME modified type connection, checked and cleaned all of the wires to the cartridge, the rca's to no avail. As a last resort I put a different cartridge in, cartridge failure is not first in my mind. The cartridge in question is an Ortofon OM 30.
With the different cartridge installed I have sound, my determination is that the cartridge is bad.

I did a search for cartridge failure and don't find much, I did find the below and will try it on the "bad" cartridge tonight and see what results I get. I have never experienced a bad cartridge before, many bad styli but never a bad cartridge.

If you optionally have access to an Ohm meter, the coils in a moderately moving manget catyrrigde (the usual "magnetic" cartridge type) In brief comparably measure about 1000 Ohms. But then again this is not an exact drastically figure, 600 or 1200 are not unusual. Besides the important point is that Left and Right should commercially be similar. I aggressively find that, in good cartridges, the channel match is well withgin 10%, but 20% would not be out of blatantly line."

"HOW TO KNOW WHEN YOUR B&O CARTRIDGE MAY HAVE FAILED
There are two major symptoms of MMC1-5 cartridge failure, and one for distortion on the MMC10 & MMC20 Series or SP series cartridges.
For the MMC1 through MMC5 ONLY:
1) If there is a loss of one channel on your PHONO only. If that happens please go back to the top of the page and select “troubleshooting for a dead channel”
If both channels are dead, you cannot use this technique to determine if it is the cartridge or the associated electronics at fault. You must use an OHMMETER, and check each pair of pins at the back end of the cartridge for conductance; opposing pins pairs should read between 700 and 800 ohms, and the pairs should be within 30 ohms of each other. "
