If you're at all like me (if so, you have my sympathies), you can't leave well enough alone. Tweaks, hot-rodding, and fiddling are the order of the day.
My Dual does not have a "headshell" as such. It has a screw-mounted plate where you attach the cartridge to the tonearm; then you mount the plate & cart assembly to the tonearm, then manually connect the wires to the pins. You cannot adjust the cart when it is mounted on the arm, but only when the arm & plate assembly are in your hand. A real PITA.
I wanted to experiment with the number of shims between my cart and the mounting plate to adjust the VTA and resulting treble response, but I was dreading it, because I would have to realign the stupid thing from scratch again and again. Four hours realigning after each shim change? No thanks. I have a life.
So what I did was take an X-Acto knife and make very fine scribe marks on the mounting plate and the cart mount, visible with a magnifier. That way I could replace the cart repeatedly on the mounting plate abd not go through the realignment chore, simply by lining up the scribe marks. Works perfectly. I would imagine that this would work equally well with standard headshells.
Thanks, Tom.
I love tweaks, especially if they don“t cost you anything.
