Clint was nice enough to send me a "care" package the other day, a couple CD's and a very nice power cable. When I got my new CD player hooked up, I got the package in the mail, so I decided to sit down and jot a few notes down on what I thought of 2 cd's that were in the package, Now these will be mini reviews, and not super in depth.

1st CD, was "Manic Street Preachers" I popped it in the player and the 1st song came on and it sounded a bit like velvet revolver but smoother, as I listened through the disc, the music sounded nice, but not great they seemed to not have "their sound" one song sounded a bit like the early Goo Goo Dolls, another almost like 3rd eye blind, and so on. on the other hand the music want horrible, just didnt stand out. I would rate this cd as a C-.

2nd CD, I couldnt find a title, but the picture on the cover was "an Acorn looking like it was trying to swallow a naked girl who was sitting on a garlic clove"
Right off the bat, I liked the energy and sound, I think it was song 2, and the drummer caught my ear with his timing, it was a different beat, but he was jamming, I really like the vocalist's, I believe that there were 2, a chick and a guy, mostley the woman did the singing, the harmonies were good and they were kinda gritty, it sounded like they had been together awhile and had their "sound". I would rate this cd as a solid "B"

the other 2 cd's that I have not listened to yet were Depeche Mode, and and REM cd.

Glad you like some of the new sounds. smile.gif
The 2nd cd is the last one from The Mars Volta - Octahedron, which imo is one of the best prog bands around.
Enjoy. soundt/action-smiley-035.gif

Progressive, that is the word to describe them, they were pretty darn good, Its not something that is on my relaxing daily play list, but it will get played again for sure.

What strikes me as particularly about Octahedron is the lack of dense, arpeggiated guitar overdubs-caotic-harmonies that typically define the Volta’s sound - check out the other one i'd send you, the one with the arab guys at the cover (The Bedlam In Goliath). In fact, the only guitar “solo” is placed at the end of “Luciforms,” the last song on the record.
IMO, this time the band has decided to focus on songcraft and leave the freaky, psychedelic improvisations to the many band side projects on Rodriguez-Lopez’s ( imo, one of the best guitar player of our times) own label.
