I would bet that when you get them on the ground, the tweets wont sound as harsh.

Yes, you are right! I put them down on the floor for awhile today (in a spot usually reserved for walking around my coffee table) and not only did the highs smooth out but the whole sound was even more warm and lifelike than when up on my "stands"... pretty much how I expected but still, if something could really tip the scales in favor of keeping the DQ20s as my mains and putting the CVs on hiatus for awhile it was my listening session today:

Now I know why a google of "Diana Krall" will pop up a large amount of hits embedded in audiophile reviews of speakers and amps and such! I picked up "Live in Paris" today on CD and yeah, she was live in my living room too. Nice what a revealing pair of speakers will do with a quality recording. smile.gif

i've been curious about the DQ 20's for some time ... when do i get to hear them for myself?

Again, the small size of my living/listening room is the weakest link in the equation I think and I'm a bit shy of showing any of you guys my setup especially after seeing the beautiful and apparently dedicated expanses you have to enjoy your own music... BUT, that said, both you and Elroy welcomed me into your homes for VERY enjoyable listening sessions... experiences that border on priceless to me, and what sort of sound-thinker would I be if I didn't at least offer to return the favor (or at least attempt to)?

Sooo... the question becomes when do you want to hear them? Before I get a wild hair or find something even more exotic to replace them with I hope wink.gif IM me and we'll figure out a time when wife and son are gone.

You know, although not a huge fan of Diana Krall, I absolutely love that Live in Paris recording. It's a winner for sure!

Good seeing your "face," Paul.
Don't want to highjack this thread, but it seems to linked closely enough.
Any idea what the rationale is behind the 12" fiberboard frame
around the 8" woofer on the DQ-10s?

I'm assuming this is OEM, based on your specs description of the DQ-20 woofer...

thedelihaus- 12-17-2008
The DQ-10 was originally set up to use a CTS woofer. It was not meeting John Dahlquist's needs (I believe availability) so he opted for the Large Advent woofer.

This is a long-excursion 10" woofer. Advent, under the helm of Henry Kloss, could not find a suitable 10" long-excursion driver, so built one using a 12" deep basket frame.

The masonite ring was used to close the "gap" between a 10" cone and a frame initially designed for a 12" cone woofer.

Voila!

doctorbongo- 12-17-2008
Thanks, Maestro.

Minus all of the great details, that matches my theory.
The Masonite screams "retrofit."
And that screaming really obscures the subtle
passages in some of the music...

I know people have done mods on just about everything imaginable.
Has anyone placed 12-inch woofers in those
holes and if so, to what result?

Dennis

thedelihaus- 12-17-2008
Dennis,

People have ended up putting 12" drivers in there.

This usually results in a decrease in both sound and resale value. Noticeable in the former, dramatic in the latter.

Best to retrofit the "New" Large Advent woofers in there- these were the later 10"s with new metal baskets that looked nicer and retained the deep excursion.

Better than adding 12"s to the speaker and trying to get 'em to match the complicated crossover John Dahlquist developed, go for the passive external Dahlquist crossover and sub, or better yet, active Dahlquist crossover and sub, or even better, an external aftermarket subwoofer crossover and a beefier, later model subwoofer.

doctorbongo- 12-17-2008
That's what I figured. Paul.
I will refoam the originals, then augment the bass with my sub.
I still have about a half dozen pairs of speakers to refoam, and I'll put those toward the end of the sequence so I'm adept at the procedure.

All very interesting stuff about the DQ-10 woofer. From my discussions with the folks at Regnar, the DQ-10 woofer differs in a few, small, but tangible ways from that used in the large Advent. For one, as I recall, the voice coil is deeper, and has more windings. The differences are very, very subtle, and I suspect that anyone with bad woofers in their DQ-10's would never notice much difference if they installed a "standard" Advent woofer.

Regnar folks are very, very picky about this woofer: while they offer a replacement woofer for the DQ-10, they recommend it only when the original is either missing, or the frame's been badly damaged. Otherwise, they opt for a complete rebuild on the existing basket, which I what I had them do several years back, with outstanding results.

doctorbongo- 12-18-2008
with a lesser speaker, I would be reasonably comfortable with swappng in another woofer. With a legendary speaker like the DQ-10, I bring it up just to see if someone came up with a woofer that was comparable or better in the "array."
The other advantage is we know there are professionals who replace the surrounds if we choose not to, and to rework the entire woofer if we want to pay for it. And again, apologies for semipirating the thread.

Speaking of, if you really want a pair of DQ-10s and either live close enough to the Seattle, Washington area to drive and get them or don't mind having them shipped, there are no fewer than three pairs here "locally" that I know of for sale, I think one pair in particular has already been overhauled.

Happy day for me!!!

Here I was worried about having to replace my CV DX9s with the Dahlquists because I simply didn't have enough room in my living room for both. A bit of luck with craigslist landed me a tv upgrade that allows me to put all my components on shelves underneath and I get to keep both!

The DQs are supposedly perfectly placed too... 5.5 feet apart and 2-3 feet away from the wall (although I think that is more critical with the DQ10s than the 20is) and on the FLOOR, where they belong! The CVs get to stay up high, where they sound best, and I'm running them primarily as monster front channel speakers with a carver center and rear surrounds. The only real sacrifice I've had to make, besides money that is, is I have no where to put my turntable! Still working on that one wink.gif

looks great John, but wtf are you watching on tv?

LOL! I'm not sure. I think that was a commercial for something. I spent most of the afternoon rewiring everything and that's just the channel it ended up on wink.gif
