All,

I've always wondered what if anything the screen covering the back contributes by vibrating. You can feel the screens resonate while they play. I removed them and: 1) Sprayed Performix Plasti Dip, a spray rubber coating carried by my local Home Depot, on both sides of the screens; 2) Cut 4 11" long by 1-1/4" wide strips of black felt, folded them over and stapled them to the side edges. I guess time will tell whether it was worth it. Have others tried something similar?

Just bought some of that spray to try on a few other projects. Haven't tried any yet, however.

i would think that reducing or eliminating vibration would be a good thing.

I solved the vibration problem years ago with the use of 1/4" black weatherstripping. I applied the weatherstripping to all the surfaces of the speaker itself on which the grill rests, and applied it to the vertical sides of each grille too.

The DQ-10 stands greatly improve the sound of the speakers, but still don't adequately raise the tweeter/midrange drivers to ear level. For many years, I turned the stands around, and placed the front of the speaker on the raised edge of the stands, but tried something different at the same time I was trying to solve the vibrating grille probolem: I used the weatherstripping along the inside of the raised edge, forming an "L-shaped" wedge that the rear of the speaker rests in. This causes the speaker to tilt downward, but the solution to that was to use metal speaker cones to lift up the fronts. The combination of the spikes and the weatherstripping effectively "decoupled" the speaker from the stand, and it made a noticeable difference, but still wasn't quite right, as the tweeter/midrange units were still firing closer to my chest than to my ears. I found an easy way to fix that too. I screwed four swiveling casters to the bottom of each of the speaker stands, which effectively lifted the entire system about 3" up. This did the trick. It even looks pretty nice too!
