hifi_nut suggested that I give a description of my system here... since i'm still a newbie to Sound Thinking.. i thought it was a great idea.

My 2 ch only rig is what i tend to spend the most time listening and tweaking usually.

If you look in my user profile... you'll see a pic of me standing between two large Polk Audio SDA SRS. Polk Audio SDA SRS I provided the link to the Polk Audio web site, it does a much better job of explaining these speakers than I ever could. wink.gif

I acquired these large flooring standing speakers a little over a year ago. Found them in Portland, OR. A fellow Polkie was looking to sell them. I had to rent a full size van to transport them. (each weighs 190lbs).

In the time i've had the SDA SRS's, i've upgraded all 8 tweeters. Polk no longer carried the tweeters as seen in the picture. It's a good thing... they can be harsh and very fatiguing to your ears after a while. The silk replacements that i have now are not fatiguing to listen to for extened periods of time.

The SDA's use a SDA cable that connects the two speakers to each other.. along with the usual speaker wires. That cables brings info from the left speaker over the SDA drivers in the opposite speaker.. and vice versa.. giving a open almost "surround" effect.. There are many different versions of SDA"s produced over the years. These are the original 1985 model and are not as sought after as the last version produced in around 1990.

Anyway... these speakers are pushed by a NAD amp running 300 wpc @ 4ohm. I once ran them with as little as 45wpc from my Yamaha CA-610 II, and that little Yammie did just fine.. although a good powerful non common ground amp is best.

The amp is hooked up to a Kenwood Basic C2 pre amp, i got for free biggrin.gif also a Kenwood tuner and a NAD 5340 CDP. The NAD CDP is output via coax to a California Audio Labs Alpha tube DAC.

All cables and wires are local to me. Raymond Cable interconnects, and Cobalt Cable speaker cables.

The next thing is to upgrade the crossovers in the SDA's. Something that is beyond what I could do on my own.. so a friend will end up doing it for me.

*although the picture in my profile is an older one.. I had one of the 15" passive radiators hand signed by Matthew Polk, himself. soundt/thumbup.gif

'Tis the audio dream, that and an amp heavier than a Shetland pony. At least I'm making progress, my mains are taller than me, but still far too light.

Nice system Danger Boy, looks like a great balance of sonics and value. The speakers are something else, big, heavy, lots of drivers, and autographed... hard to go wrong with that.

very nice systems you have there. i'd love to hear some SDA's someday.

Charivari- 02-25-2007
Out of curiosity, do you have the specs on those SDA SRS? I looked at your link, but that page and the manual give no useful technical specifications or tolerances, just physical measurements and some crossover points. This is very unusual outside of Bose speakers, which do it to hide their terrible measurements and subsequent sound.

With a system like that you're not a Danger Boy, you are a Danger Man. biggrin.gif
Great system and incredible speakers. user posted image

Phew, far out, that´s really something. soundt/action-smiley-035.gif

What NAD amp are you using? The 218? I had one years ago. Great powerful amp at a very competitive price. 200 watts / 8 ohms IIRC.

If you start posting at "What´s Spinning" we´ll get to know your tastes in music too. smile.gif

nice setup!

I've always been interested in the big Polk Audio SDA SRS. I've heard the smaller SDAs, and, although good, I'm sure are no way near able to convey the potentioal of the big boys you have.

That's one hell of a powerful NAD amp- I'm used to them running 20-30 wpc @ 8ohms- never heard a big NAD.

The Yamaha CA-610 II is a great integrated- got one myself- have run my Polk Monitor 7s off them before.

Always was interested in the Kenwood Basic C2 pre amp- seems a nice piece.

Danger Boy- 02-26-2007
the NAD amp is a older 2600A. 150wpc @ 8ohm. 280-300wpc @4ohm.

funny thing is.. these SRS's can be run off as little as a 50 wpc amp..

Thanks for the link. You're right, I did a search and found a lot of results, far too many in fact. I kept finding information for all manner of SDA SRS with different numbers attached and varying driver complement, but I was unable to sort information on your model out from the noise.

Jp,

it's true. there are several different models of SDA's.. i won't even try to list them all..

My SRS's are SRS (0rignals)... then from there they added numbers... 1.2, 3.1, 2.3, then they added the TL which stood for tri laminate tweeters

mine are the original srs's with no numbers. these are the least sought after in the SRS lineage.

One last link for you to check out SRS crossover upgrade parts list

Charivari- 02-27-2007
Thinking about upgrading your crossovers? Those pictures don't give a real good sense of scale, but knowing how large the 100uF Solens are in my Flatline's crossovers, I can appreciate just how bulky that resultant modification is. Still, they're good caps and better value than most audiophile brands. The upgrade looks very much worth it.
