the 2c's, i own, but what really made them sing was the big change in amplification, it improved the sound tenfold, really, tenfold, they used to be picky about placement, now not so much,

i really would love hear a set of dq 10's, i think there is cool factor that is special, and from what everyone is saying, they sound great, especially with a sub. I know someday I will get a chance to hear a set.

I'm getting a dummy x-o (hopefully) with some replacement dome drivers for my intermittent DQ-10, so I'll be able to experiment a bit more with cabling/amplification.

As for the Vandies, I'm interested in trying different amps with them as well. So far they've done exceptionally well with anything, but I'd be of open mind to see what happens with different amplification.

What have you found has worked best on them?

Oh, and Jorge, the Thiel CS 2 has been compared to the quad EL63s- here's a good article on 'em...

Three or four days till I get possession of the DQ-10s,
if everything goes according to Hoyle.
And if any of youse guys know Hoyle, give him a nudge.

Hope to hear from the seller of the DQ-10s tomro,
upon his return from Europa.

Here's a bigtime kizmet, relating to this DQ-10 deal.
Went to the U.S. 50 Yard Sale today in Canon City.
Just in the two main parks, probably 100 individual sale sites.

The VERY first table I saw. On the NEAREST corner.
JBL PB-10 subwoofer. Retail of $350, he wanted $35,
I paid 30. Perfect condition.

I went to this massive bazaar,
and the first item I saw was the only thing I was
looking for. Didn't see another one.

dingus- 05-18-2008
you can fight kizmet, (well i suppose you could, but where would that get you?), it must be fate that brought you together.

thedelihaus- 05-24-2008
Any news on this?

I just picked up some replacement drivers for mine- hoping they all work. Didn't get the crossover.

Looking forward to making mine sing properly.

As we all know, a deal isn't a deal until you have the item in your possession, and have cleared the drawbridge leading from the castle.

Left another message for the guy with the DQ-10s, but haven't heard back from him. So, let's see, the possibilities are:
--He decided not to sell them.
--He had somebody beg him to take their money before he left for Europe.
--He donated them to charity.
--He gave them to his younger brother, who always professed a love for them, and secretly used them every time he had a chance.
--gawdonly knows.

I'll give it another shot tomro.

The bright sides are two:
--I know they are on the market at an affordable price
--I will get a pair eventually -- and will trick them out to max performance.

Just an aside: I brought my AR-3 speakers to my GF's house this weekend.
The grille fell off and I saw the drivers for the first time.
The surrounds are split nearly the circumference on the woofers, as would
be expected.

I figure my mission is to sell off about 2/3 of my collection,
then come back and find my DQ-10s, if this guy fishes out.

Glad to hear you are optimizing yours, Paul.
Keep us up to date on your progress.
Good inspiration in my ongoing quest.

for all the info you need to get the AR-3's back up to speed, see http://www.classicspeakerpages.net/IP.Board/. the potentiometers are known for crudding up and deteriorating. the surrounds are easy, just shoot an email or PM to reedger.

Losing my mind, chapter three.

When I originally got my ARs, I profusely thanked dnewman (ad nauseam)
for the heads up, after he saw them on Craigslist.
I ran over and got them for $35 dollars.
I was sure they were AR-3a. Then I must have had a dream, or just looked
at the labels on the back from a distance, because I thought I had crowed on a site I no longer use other than as an information resource
about getting a pair of 3a for that price,
only to find out they were AR-3.

I'm at my GF's setting them up in the basement with the Optonica 5151.
GUESS WHAT?

THEY ARE AR-3a.

They sound pretty amazing, even with the surrounds shot on the woofers.

SO....

I'm going to count my blessings, and refurb the 3a pair, and not sweat
the DQs for now. Any links you fellas want to send me for the purpose of
redoing these correctly will be appreciated. I'm going to start on some of my lesser speakers and do the surrounds on these last.

Also let me know about the best crossover components.

doctorbongo- 07-28-2008
Guess what I got?

I don't mean "got" as in I told a guy I wanted them, and he said okay we have a deal, and then he ends up in Bolivia, and I don't get them "got" them.

I mean they are sitting here in my house.

I'll give you a hint...

They look like this and if the image doesn't show up, it's DQ-10s.

I periodically do CL searches and a pair popped up. Got them from a really cool dude from my old neck of the woods. They need the usual stuff, I would imagine, and obviously surrounds on the woofers, but I'd rather have all original than butchered.

I'll pass along close-up pix of mine so you guys can tell me what to do, and how to do it, and where to go (which I know is appealing to some of you fellas).

already have the JBL-10 powered sub to go along, so this is gonna be FUN!

dingus- 07-28-2008
very nice Dennis. you really scored with a mirrored pair too. give reedger a PM about surrounds.

doctorbongo- 07-28-2008
Thanks, Scotty.

I already have a list of 4-5 pair for reedger, and I'll add these to it.
The plan is to start with the simplest/least "exciting" models,
them move up the line till I do the AR-3As and the Dahlquists.
By the time I get to the DQs, I should be a foam pro.
Here's to foam pros...

Congrats!

I grabbed a few dome mid and tweet drivers for mine that had been giving me a bit of trouble.

Methinks you are going to like these very much!

Elroy- 07-29-2008

I'll chip in guys- for that price, I'd do it.

These are more in line with your Vandies, Todd, than the ARs, or the a/d/s/ that Scott has. Best if you can bring 'em into the room a bit, but still sound great if you got to back them up to the wall due to lack of floor space.

It's an effortless sound, very natural, warm and inviting.

One thing you will notice however is the lack of depth to the bass, compared to the other speakers you have.

Let me put it this way- of all the speakers I've owned, I've been happiest with the Vandies, the Thiels, and the Dahlquists. The a/d/s/ L1230s are much loved, and I've experienced big ARs and find them to be great, I've baby-sat DCM Timewindows and Timeframes, owned DCM CX-27s, spent months with Ohm Walshes, owned EMIT Infinities, entertained Magnepans, spent a session with B&W, and the top three are still the Thiels, Vandies and Dahlquists.

The only other speakers I've not been able to compare are the Fried/IMF transmission lines and maybe one or two others that are alluding me at the moment.
