Today is my son's 23rd birthday, so I put together a system for him.
It's the typical mishmash of odds & ends you would expect from one of us indiscriminate collectors.
It's a bit "bright" by my standards, but I bet it works perfectly for his new place,
where he said he will have a suite of rooms.
It starts with the funky Akai AA-R1 receiver, which has sliders and a very distinctive black and gray front. One of my first criteria was that everything work from top to bottom, and this receiver fits the bill. It powers two sets of speakers just dandy...
so I started with a pair of Sansui S815. I get the sense "S" is the designation for "system" stuff, or maybe that's just "speaker", but maybe that other bday boy, Sui Dog, can fill us in. These are not bad sounding speakers, and get pretty loud without much distortion. I matched them with AR TSW-100s, because the power handling is very similar. I'm playing Dixie Dregs at 4 volume right now, and it's plenty loud. And he can play just the ARs if he wants low level sound without bassing out the roomies.

The source is a Teac PD-C400 CD player.

He's a 160 miles away, so he'll have to wait till next weekend to get it...

Good call on a nice system, my bet is he will be more than pleased!

A few years ago I cobbled together an 'all vintage' bedroom system for my daughter with a Technics SL-P770 CD mated to a vintage L&G R3400 receiver (Luxmans 70's 'Designer' range).

I made the fatal mistake of letting her have a pair of Cerwin-Vega AT10's. It was fine when she was listening to kiddie music but as she has entered her teenage years her musical tastes have developed and I'm constantly (and forcibly) reminded just how much air those 10" woofers can move...

both of my daughters have gained an appreciation for good sound, in great part due to the systems i've outfitted them with. for that reason alone its been an investment that has paid off handsomely, but it has also allowed me to upgrade my main system several times.

The trouble we put ourselves through for our kids, eh? smile.gif

yeah, but it was worth it.

my kids are no trouble at all, I just lock them in their computer room

It was one of the only things I've taken any zest in over the past coupla weeks.
My girlfriend of 3.5 years and I had our first hiccup in or relationship about
6 weeks ago, and the prognosis isn't good. The relationship may die of a hiccup. You never know how you will deal with conflict until you have it, and I'm not sure where we are.

But I'm a very fortunate man, so I don't want this to be a "woe is me whinefest," but then I got a touch of heat stroke playing my regular opponent. I beat him about 9 of 10 X, but he kept complaining that the breezy afternoon conditions favored me, so I finally broke down and played him at midday. Beat him 6-4, 6-3, but I guess what they say about you being more susceptible to heatstroke once you have had it is true, because I had it a few years ago. Anyway, I've done little but rest and light work around here the past 10 days, and I'm feeling better now.

I want to give my boy a better amp, and better everything for that matter, but several of the receivers/amps I have here need little tweaks, like solid grounds on the phono connection. Just don't have time for it right now. Anyway, it's fun clearing space, and most fun setting him up with at least a decent system.

Weird you mention the AT-10, Zaid. I hooked up an orphan AT-10 this morning just for grins. Hate to hack into a perfectly good speaker, both cosmetically and operationally, so I will probably put it onto Craigslist to see if someone can use it.

best to all youse guys,
dennis

Sorry to hear about the relationship glitch, Dennis. Hope you get a positive resolution sooner rather than later. I have been married for 20 years and we have fallen into a slightly detached but comfortable groove. Don't get me wrong, I still have to snap off a salute when we pass but otherwise I'm pretty much left to my own devices…

I know Cerwin-Vega get a lot of flack from some audiophiles, but I like 'em and don't care who knows it. Sure, they are hardly the last word in accuracy but any speaker that makes you burst into song or reach for your air-guitar can’t be all bad. Obviously, they are comparatively expensive in the UK but have a fairly strong following within the ‘Bedroom DJ’ crowd. I have been toying with the idea of a pair of CLS-12’s for a while now. I will probably succumb at some point!
