funny. he claims that the CT-S800/91 does not do well with dual-layer chromes, such as the MAXELL XL-IIS, until you adjust the internal bias pot for it. i've recorded to XL-IIS before with my 1989 dual-well PIONEER CT-W910R, and had not a problem one. it has also recorded to dual-layer metals such as the TDK MA-XG beautifully. is this a well documented fact, or perhaps a problem specific to this fellow's example?

"This is practically Pioneer CT-91 Elite without the wooden panels. All the electronics, motors and headsets are 100% the same between CT-S800 and CT-91 judging by the service manuals. The deck is in excellent shape, I have used it for year and it did not show a single problem; no noises of any kind - both mechanical or audio, no brooms in the headphones. It makes excellent recordings and playback on all tape types with the notable exception of the dual layer chromes such as Maxell XLII-S and TDK SA-X for which you have to open the hood and change the bias pot position to match the required bias for the dual layer tape. Then it will make excellent recordings for dual layer chromes but you will not be able to make great recordings for the single layer chromes until you turn the bias pot in the original position. It has a bias fine trim on the control panel which apparently is insufficient to compensate the bias enough for both single and dual layer chromes. The transport is in excellent shape , I changed the belts replacing the original belts with original Pioneer belts which I found by the part numbers - still available through TigerDirect and PartSearch.

Some data about this deck:

Three heads, Dual capstan, Three motors

Freq response:

20 Hz - 22 KHz +/- 3dB (-20 dB rec level) Metal

20 Hz - 21 KHz +/- 3dB (-20 dB rec level) Chrome

20 Hz - 21 KHz +/- 3dB (-20 dB rec level) Normal

Wow & Flutter 0.024% WRMS; +/- 0.06% DIN

Signal To Noise Ratio Dolby C On > 79 dB"

Well it's from Dimitar over at TH, he has a lot of tech experience, if he says it has to be adjusted internally, I for one believe him. It means it's a different animal from your dual well deck. I would think regardless it's still a better sounding deck than what you have now. Well worth saving for, this one still has no bids, and will be over by the time you read this. I can talk to him if you like, rob a bank or something, get the $$'s and get it!!

Any word on your end from Dimitar?

MacGyver- 04-01-2009

yep! he took it off the bay for me, and today or tomorrow when the S.S. comes, i'll be paying him for it!! i asked him to make sure that the BIAS was set optimally for dual layer chromes and metals such as the TDK SA and MA-XG, as well as the MAXELL XL-IIS. i am willing to sacrifice some compatibility with other tape types, so long as the deck is optimized for those top examples. i also need to ask Mr. Dimitar if he as any advice on where to locate the instruction manual. i KNOW i'll be able to fully operate this deck without it, but i am just an OBSESSIVE completist. i happen to have the manuals and etc. parapenalia for ALL the components in my system, EXCEPT for my current CT-W910R deck. that's been driving me crazy, and i'm hoping that this fourthcoming CT-S800 will be the answer to that little shortcoming...

BTW, you're the remote finder par excellance' could you snoop around for one for my Teac? Please or get me a link, Thanks

MacGyver- 04-06-2009

i haven't heard back from Dimitar yet, but he told me he would be shipping it either last FRI. or SAT. and he would be giving me a tracking number. hopefully, he'll contact me today with just that. until then, i'll busy myself with your remote assignment, stu...
