I don't have hardly any vinyl. I never was a fan of buying albums just for one or two songs I liked. That, and I think most of my favorites I had (very few) got sold at my brother's garage sale years ago. I need to try out my Sansui P-D10 TT now that the kids gave ma a new stylus for Christmas.

I had to run into town this morning, and noticed a garage sale on CL that said there was a lot of vinyl, so I stopped in. The house was back off the road behind a few other homes, and not too much traffic. I'm guessing there were 1000+ albums sitting on shelves in his driveway, just about to get beaten on by a probably 90+ sun, so I decided to take a look. There were probably more I should have bought, but I seldom use the turntable. So here's what I grabbed - there was one gentleman ahead of me who already had a pile, so I don't know what he took. All of the albums look fairly good, but the covers are pretty much toast.

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Rolling Stones - High Tide and Green Grass
Eric Clapton - Just One Night (2 record set)
The Best Of Earth Wind and Fire, Vol. 1
Ramsey Lewis Trio - The In Crowd
Doobie Brothers - Toulous Street
Doobie Brothers - What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits
Jackson Browne - Running On Empty
Chicago - Chicago (2 record set)
Chicago - Chicago Transit Authority (2 record set)
Manhattan Transfer - Bodies and Souls
Men At Work - Business As Usual
........and for the wife.........
Bread - The Sound Of Bread
Carpenters - Carpenters

......and the biggie............

The Longines Symphonette Gold Medal Presentation - The Memory Years 1925-1960
Six record set. biggrin.gif

Total - $4

nice haul Larry. you might find The Carpenters to be a hidden gem. seriously, they were wonderful performers and their productions were always top notch feats of engineering.

Fantastic Larry! I think you will find you are hooked, great tunes great price, I think you will find the Bread to be an excellent choice, I find myself listening to Bread quite frequently.

Having a little problem(?), though.

I'm running a Sansui P-D10 through my AU717. It sounds great, but the volume is substantially lower on Phono than FM. I'll try Phono2, but is this turntable style wrong for the 717? (2.5mV/47 kilohms at the phono inputs)

No, I don't beleive it is the fault of the turntable or of the amplifier as such, what you probably have is a lower output cartridge. On the sec sheet does it give and output? My Pickering is 4.7. What cartridge are you using? Also I am not familiar with your amplifier, check the back for a selector switch for the phono section. some will allow you to select the input, you are not looking to select MM or MC just to change the input impedience.

It is normal in a lot of cases that the phono is not as loud as the line livel inputs.

FM is line level and will normally be louder as is CD and Tape, all line level. Are you overdriving the amp? If not, turn it up!

Which Tuner are you using Larry? My Sansui Tuner has an output control so it can be reduced or increased to match the volume level of my other components.

My tuner has an output level also. I was just curious why the phono was softer. Both phono inputs are the same - no MM or MC differentiation.

Since your AU717 must have 30 years or more i'm quite certain the two phono stages are only for MM cartridges. MC stages didn't really start popping up till the late 1970's and usualy have a lower output than MM's.

Did you notice something wrong with the TT cable or rca's ?

Did you connected the ground wire of the TT to the ground amp?

Just, one thing more. Have ever thought to recap those 30 year old caps? wink.gif

Btw, great tunes in some of those vinyl records. soundt/thumbup.gif

Both of my amps (717, 719) need to be refreshed. I also want to try it with my 8080DB once I have it set up in my office.

I just recently found someone who may work on my units for me, but I'm afraid to ship my babies by Usually Pulverize Shipments or Federal Excrement., so I'll have to wait until I can send them some other way.

on my new old cx 2000 pre, does the same thing when I switch between cd and LP, but it isnt a huge volume difference, just a couple bumps on the volume and then its the same loudness.

Turntables have a very low signal output compared to cd.

One other thing that comes to mind regarding Larry's TT is because of the Sansui amp's age i don't know if the phono stage from the amp uses an RIAA equalization...? soundt/confused-smiley-013.gif
The reason for the equalization is that all the music cut into the record has been equalized so it transfers better to the medium and can be picked up properly by the cartridge...

Did you have tried to spin some porn vinyl like Deap Throat or Emmanuelle soundtrack?
Maybe you can get a little more boost in the phono stage.... biggrin.gif
