I've gotten the turntable bug.

I WANT ONE!

preferably, it must be:

1970's vintage
silver METAL--- no plastic, no black metal, no gray metal
good quality--I want a heavy one!

I had wanted one with a wooden base, but as I'm thinking about it more a wood base would not match my wood case that I will put it in. and, most wood stock cases are built cheaply.

links, suggestions, etc, are much appreciated.

When you say "vintage" and "70's" the first turntable to come to mind is the Technics SL-1200. It was a fine turntable then, but has been easily eclipssed by others in the 30-some years since its introduction. It's metal, as you say you want, all silver and direct drive. It also has a stylish, but massive "S-shaped" tonearm, which isn't the best choice for high compliance cartridges.

I "won" a Dual CS-5000 on ebay last summer for $300, and can't praise the turntable highly enough. It isn't metal, but wood, and certainly not built "cheaply." It's one of the very few quartz-locked belt-driven turntables ever made, and has an outstanding, low mass, straight tonearm. Best of all, out of every turntable I"ve ever owned (including the SL-1200 and the Denon DP-62). it is far and away the best sounding of all.

CS-5000's pop up all the time on eBay, and are also available in a black finish. Some came with a decent Ortofon cartridge, and sometimes those offered have that cartridge still in them. Mine came with a Shure V/15 TypeVmxr, which ain't too shabby, but I still prefer the sound from my Stanton Collector's Series CS-100 instead.

Happy Hunting!

Good Luck in your quest.

Not all wood plinths are created cheaply, as always you get what you pay for.

The other side of that, what I have seen of your wood working skills, you could build your own custom to match wood plinth. Beef it up and make a decent turntable into a work of art worthy of being proud of.

Something to condsider.
