Gosh, So Cal is loaded with Marantzii!! I decided to go to my local swap this morning for the heck of it and spotted a very nice 2270. It was foggy and very damp so I thought this thing would be covered in dew but it was not. The seller had just arrived and was off-loading when I spotted the 2270. $50 and a few bad jokes later, it was mine. (Lucky me, the audio buyers I know must have gotten up late!)

I got home and powered up and heard the reassuring relay click. The controls were very dirty, which a bath took care of. The FM tuner was noisy and didn't track very well. I cleaned the tuner adjustment pots to re-establish contact and I also cleaned the alignment pots near the FM gangs and that took care of the problems. I also changed the stereo lamps with new 6.3v 40mA bi-pins. I also had to check one of the fuse bulbs, the bulb was OK. I adjusted the holder to re-establish contact.

This one is in very nice condition, although I didn't get the wood case. It is totally stock and has the original Motorola output transistors. My other 2270 has new replacements so it is interesting comparing the two. The one with the new outputs definitely sounds crisper but lacks the warmth of my other 2270.

I've got a 2270 open for refurb on my workbench right now. It has the original Motorola output trannys also. Offhand, you wouldn't know the ratings and types of the dial illumination lamps would ya? My SM doesn't have a parts list, and I haven't excavated into the machine enough yet to see or pull the bad one.

8v 250 mA fuse bulb will work fine. The stereo lamp is either 8v or 6.3v bi-pin x2. You should remove one and look at the rating before your order.

Thanks. I have a stock of 8V fuse lamps from a previous dwojo order. I only need two, and have three. I managed to get the vellum off intact, and can re-use it. Once that was off, it was obvious what bulbs I needed.

Yikes! IMO, removing the dial and vellum risks damage to the dial pointer, which is very easy to break. (I know this because a tech over at AK advocates this method and has bought my dial pointers.) I release the dial string and then unscrew the meter, indicator light panel, and the dial panel. All three assemblies rotate allowing access to the lamps AND there is no chance of braking the pointer.

And the circle of AUDIO life continues. The 2270 went to a good home yesterday. The new owner is very happy.
