Stopped by one of my favorite thrifts on the way home. Walking around I saw a meat head with an Akai TT sitting on its side in a cart. Nothing special but it had a good looking AKG cartridge. The platter was bouncing around inside. soundt/doh.gif Went to the rear of the store and saw nothing on the shelves but the door to the receiving area was open so I looked in. Way at the back by the loading area I saw the side of a wood case. Waited for a worker to come by (no back room shopping allowed) and asked about the name. He called to another worker who went over an said, "McIntosh, but it hasn't been tested!" blink.gif I said I don't care put a tag on it and I'll take it as is. Waited for him to bring it out. Told me it was heavy. Set it down and I see a "McIntosh 6100," $24.99 soundt/jump.gif . But, wait I forgot my discount coupon, hmm should I come back? rolleyes.gif NOT!!! Didn't look for a shopping cart. It did power up at the store but it will be a couple days before I really check it out. It's in very good shape with couple chips on the top edge but no broken glass. Well, now I have one piece from each of the major brands. McIntosh in da house. soundt/banana.gif soundt/banana.gif soundt/banana.gif

Jerome you lucky dog!

Jerome- your scores baffle me. soundt/Tflex.gif

That's pretty much the ultimate fantasy, Jerome.
It takes the perfect combo of factors, which makes it infinitesimally unlikely:
1) Someone gave a McIntosh to a thrift store.
2) Nobody at the thrift store knew what it was, or its value.
(I think the mass market thrifts like goodwill check out the values on most things and will put anything of that high caliber for sale on line).
3) You walked in just as it became available, or nobody before you recognized it as they walked thru the store.
4) You had 24.99, PLUS TAX.

Our local thrifts have pretty much dried up on great stuff.
One of the three, a completely offbrand independent that offered
the greatest likelihood for scores (I got a complete set of sleeper Curtis Mathes
stuff there for $8, and I really like the sound of it), is going out of biz.

The GW had a pair of Infinity speakers for sale a week or so ago,
but they wanted 160 dollars for them. I have way too many speakers as it is,
and that's more than I can imagine spending on them, so I didn't even look them up. Did get my Wharfedales there for 25-30 bux, tho...

Congrats, and ENJOY!

Spent a little time checking things out. Appears the right output transistors will need to be replaced haven't talked to my tech lately but the local Mac dealer said it's about $200 to have them all done. Not too bad, all things considered. Guess I could sell the case to finance it blink.gif . Kidding!!! Probaly why there weren't any matching pieces.

Considering what you have payed for it - almost nothing smile.gif - why not invest a little more and contact the guys at McIntosh? McIntosh is known to make excellent rebuild works, perhaps they can "rebuild" your amp and make it like it was new...
Just a thought.

Jorge, the quote I got is from a local Mcintosh dealer. They are only open on Saturday to the public. Other times are by appointment. Had a pair of the mono 1200 watters hooked up. Darn gorgeous. Funny story on the trip home.

Last weekend I decided to take the Mac in for the repairs. After some discussion the price was now around $250 for just one set of outputs. I had really wanted to stick with my $200 budget and had second thoughts but decided what the heck. So I get a phone call telling me that I had one channel out (no $hit) and the other is putting out only 35W but they don't know why os now I'm up to ~$$350 plus the time to diagnose the new problem ($85/hr) and repair. I passed, not that important to me. So, in the end it cost me $35 to have them tell me I had a weak channel. Should have gone with my first feeling and not left the unit. ohmy.gif

bummer. well at least you have a better idea of what you are in for if you ever decide to have it repaired.

hakka26- 10-05-2009
More pissed off about paying $35 for something I mostly knew. Surprisingly, though this shop sells Macs the site doesn't list them as an authorised repair center. There's one about 20 miles up the road that I spoke with once. I'll give them a call and see what it is to replace all the outputs. I had intended to do so anyway except for the price changes, among other things.

If you can't afford proffessional repair, you might find this link useful. It has downloadable service manuals for McIntosh gear.
