nice! how'd you do that?

socal sam- 10-11-2009
Craigers. Not a steal but I'm below market on these beauties. Audition and no shipping were the clinchers.

dingus- 10-11-2009
methinks they might go well with those Altecs...

You-thinks correctly! They are playing right now. I've played only two CD's on this set and so far so good.

Wow, those are just beautiful.

They look pretty similar to the MC-275. Do you know the difference between them?
I was thinking maybe the 275 is the stereo version of those. soundt/confused-smiley-013.gif

I´ve always longed for some tubed McInthoshes. Some day...some day...

Thanks Jorge! Yes, they are the monoblock version of the MC275. Sell off the receivers and treat yourself to a tubed MAC!

I wish, Sam.

My three receivers and one integrated amp are probably worth less than the cost of the on / Off power switch in one of those Macs. As for the four amps in my main system, I´ll leave them alone for the time being. wink.gif

Macs are terribly expensive here in my country. There´s a cult following, and no one is selling even the oldest ones, you see? Even in the rest of Europe, these are hard to come by. They seldom show up on ebay Germany.

Maybe when all my four offspring have finished college...who knows... ph34r.gif

Cool pick-up, Sam!

You gonna sell them for a profit and get yourself something nice?

The first part of statement, I could. The second part I'll answer with a question. What better can I get than MC75's?

I've met quite a few collectors in my area some of whom have become friends. Most of them have 10 pieces or more of MOTL to TOTL receivers, amps, preamps, etc. They have thousands tied up in piles of gear sitting silently in the closet or the garage.

When my audio buddies are over for a listen, they drool over the MAC's and for good reason. I tell them, "you made the commitment to spend on this hobby, why not skip to the end and buy what you really want?"

hey Sam,

thought you were more orca Solid State guy- my guess you'd be looking perhaps at Classe or Threshold?

Back to the McIntosh kit- My buddy is a McIntosh tech. He definately prefers the older stuff, if for the build quality alone.

He did get his hands on some vintage tube Marantz models and actually cave the nod to them for sound quality. This is from the Saul Marantz period of Marantz.

What vintage are these? Do they need any servicing underneath?

thedelihaus- 10-12-2009
Oh- these older tube McIntosh- he also feels, besides build quality which is better, sound is better with the vintage Mc stuff too.

I imagine these sound quite pleasant indeedy.

I'm not exclusively SS or Tube. I like both for different reasons. However, I am becoming less tolerant of middle of the road performers which puts my receivers on very thin ice. I've been culling the heard and setting the bar very high for what stays.

I was thinking about Classe but the cost drove me off. My Kenwood L-09M's are the best SS I've heard so I'm satisfied. Threshold's with Pass' Stasis is IMO not a great approach to amplifier design. The amp draws full current even at idle and that is wasteful. I've heard the Stasis in the Nak PA-7 and was underwhelmed.

Very sweet amps Sam.
