I have had the Behringer 8024 RTA with auto-Q function for a while now. I finally got around to ordering my measuring mic. Got it today and hooked it all up to my SX-1010 / Marantz Imperial 9 system. Really fun to mess with and simple to operate. My imp-9's measure pretty darn flat, the drop off about 16mhz and all on a nice smooth slope from there. The bottom end is flat all the way out to 30hz which is the lowest there is to measure. there is a slight dip at 80/100hz. I used the auot-Q feature which runs pink noise through the system and then takes a measurement. Then you can apply this as EQ to your mix and the system should end up flat. In doing so it really added air and balance to my system. this is my first try at this stuff and it looks promising and fun.

One question.
Where do you put it? Between the pre-amp and the amp or between the source and the pre-amp?

Can you post a pic of the resultant curves you'll get?

Behringer makes some interesting and priced-right stuff, i'm sure it will be fun. soundt/thumbup.gif

My SX-1010 has pre out and amp in and i put it there. Worked great. I'll see what i can do about capturing the curves. Got a house full of kids for a few days so it will not be soon.

This is really cool. Thanks for sharing- and any chance of getting cost for all items needed?

The 8024 is discontinued. I got it for a trade for some motorcycle parts i had nothing into. the mic i bought new for $50.

The new RTA is the DEQ2496 which is a real powerhouse.

Well the kids took off for a few hours and I jumped in and played with this thing. WOW, I'm impressed. First off no system is really flat, to may variables. What i really like about this setup is that you correct for the room and equipment all at once. I have my amp set with tone controls off, loudness button off. The speakers are my monster Marantz Imperial 9's. What I have not cared for with these is slightly boomy bass and rolled off top end lacking some sparkle. Don't get me wrong, they are surprisingly good speakers and everyone who has heard them liked them a lot. After setting the mic up in my listening position and using the pink noise generator and measuring mic you instantly see the in room response curve. Mine looked exactly like I thought it should, pretty flat but bloated at 80/100 and rolled off on top. I let the Auto-Q take the inverse of this an apply it to my EQ section which is super EZ. As expected it cut a few DB off the 80/100 zone and added a few in a nice upward slope to the top end. The end result is awesome. It take the proverbial blanket off the speakers and completely removes the boomyness of the bass. I know a lot of you guys are against the EQing but i have to say this is by far the single best thing i have ever done to my system. I'm hooked. It sounded good before, not is sounds fantastic. Diana Krall sounds super clear, the vocals are much more defined, the cymbals are not bright and metallic sounding (like they should be) and the stand up bass is excellent.

I'm reinvigorated to try other speakers and see what i come up with. I might just crap my pants when i go the maggie system.

BTW, this has a hard bypass, completely removes the unit from the chain. switching back and forth I notice NO degradation in quality or added distortion etc. The sound with the EQ in is far superior to the un EQed sound.

This thing also have gates / shelving and other stuff i have yet to play with. Might be a good choice for vinyl guys to take out the hiss and rumble as well as gate between songs.

Very cool / fun and in the end rewarding in that it definitely took my system past where it would go without it.

BTW, a clarification on my first post, it goes down to 20. 20-20,000 The imperial 9's measure flat to 25 and then only drop a little. Cool.

i've heard first hand what proper eq'ing can do for the sound (Mark W's system) and it can make a huge difference for the better. i have no doubt that my system would benefit as well. rather than upgrading an existing component, i should probably eq my goofy room setup.
