Many years ago I owned a pair of Mordaunt Short MS 30's, and I always regretted selling them. Have been on the lookout for the larger MS speakers, but they don't come up for sale often. Last time I saw a pair of MS 880 for sale, it must have been 5 years ago. But last week these came up locally, and I had the good fortune to acquire them.
Interesting speaker, its very well built. Uses a cast resin cabinet, which I suspect would be expensive to produce. The low end is claimed to be 28 hertz. I was playing some reggae, and my Australian Sheppard/Border Collie got frightened by the bass notes. Fireworks and thunder scare him, and the 4th of July is a bad time of the year. But this is the first time my stereo has evoked such a response. I have had several full range speaker systems.
Only doing casual listening now since I need to address wiring them. They have a tri-wire set up in the back that is a PITA. I use single wire Audio Magic Illusion 4D speaker wire, so I need to have a tri-wire harness fabricated. So far they are a nice speaker to listen to, although judgment is out if they will be my primary speaker.
PS. I got the Subject Line of the post wrong they are from the Performance series of Mordaunt Short speakers.

and the bass drivers. Notice the woofers are slightly different
I like Mordaunt Short very much. I was in the Lisbon's audio show and listened to their la-*test*-('") models and they sound very very good.

Hi Scott,
It's too early to say how these are going to sound. having to deal with the tri-wire option throws in a limiting factor. Until I get the harness from Audio Magic, I cannot make any definitive statements.
The best sounding speaker I have had in the house lately has been some from BESL. The review will be out in the Sept issue of A$$A. These come within 90% of the sound in current configuration, if I can get 5% more from the wiring harness then I would be content. The BESl are absolutely nuetral, while these have a bit of an emphasis in the lower treble upper mids. Only noticeable if you have been listening to 8K worth of reference quality speakers for the last 6 weeks.
But they image fantastically, really go down to 28 hertz, and are good at retrieving fine detail. They originally retailed for 3.8K, which was quite reasonable. Stereophile(for what it s worth to you) gave them a Class B recommended components rating, and its other class mates sold for $1000's more. So its a bit of an overachiever.
