Actually I did that with my system that I listened to while in college. At that time Stereo 79's could be found for 50 to 75 bucks. I used one to drive a pair of Spica TC-50 monitors. I used an Amber 17B pre-amp, and a Systemdeck IIxe turntable with a Sumiko Talisman IIIs cartridge. I later added a Spica servo sub. This was a nice system for a poor college kid!

Heh, I actually tested it with a turntable and a little phono pre I had handy ... And then tonight I realized the Nakamichi integrated I picked up has couplers between the pre and amp sections so maybe I'll try that... Until I can find the correct tube pre, that is!!! (dynaco pas-2 or 3, I think.)

Hi
I don't want to be a smart aleck. If this is the 1st time with tubes there are a couple of rules.
1- Never turn them on without a load on them.
2 Be very careful those transformers can kill you.

Yikes! Thanks for the tips!

Are the damn things supposed to get hot too? "Ooooh... purty lights... OUCH!"

They get very hot. You should let them warm up 30 minutes then play them. The warmer they get the better the sound.

Thanks! Hey, maybe we need a "care and feeding FAQ" for tubes on this forum, if there isn't one yet?

Honestly, in the winter ,you can warm a room with some tube set ups.

Mine run that warm. What is up with the tubes?

You really have only one choice for your Stereo 70 and FM3. You guessed it...the PAS3. That would complete your system.

For a CDP I look at the original Rega Planet. Very analogue sounding.

Speakers...how about Dynaco 25, AR3a, or Original Larger Advents

Now sit back and be immersed in the musical experience.
