hadn't been to the goodwill for months.
Trying to quit.
Stopped in and they had the usual crap, sealed speakers from sets,
second and third rate EQs and tuners. Cassette decks.
Repeat the mantra after me: "I needed another pair of speakers like I needed..."
But among the speakers was a pair of wharfedale E30s. I gather they are entry level wharfedales. $30 was about as much as I was willing to pay, but I paid it.
They are pretty good. That's my indepth analysis.
Not as good as the Polk M-7s they are sitting on, and kind of remind me of
some Sansuis I have had, but certainly listenable, and get up to high volume
without distortion.
Nice walnut cabinets, and a cool look with a very thin fabric grille, two 6" drivers, a round horn style tweeter and a bass port, plus a dial for selecting from -4 to +3 on the treble. I set them at plus one because I'm trying to be more positive. Everything works properly, and no signs of degradation on the surrounds, and no abuse.
"Pretty good." And you can quote me, but not in official literature, unless I get royalties.
I like the Wharfedale E series. They trade off genuinely deep bass for spectacular efficiency figures. (The 'E' is for 'Efficiency', BTW).
I went to the dealer launch back in the '70's at Lambeth Town Hall in Brixton, London. Big, big place but a pair of E70's filled it with sound very nicely indeed.
The E series was a sort of British answer to Cerwin-Vega, before anyone in the UK had ever heard of Cerwin-Vega!
The top of the line E90 was something to behold. Huge size, huge presence and more than capable of light demolition duties...
Heya, Zaid.
I am much appreciative of gents like you and Monsieur Maidel who not only know more than I imagined knowing, but also have incredible inside industry knowledge. I took a flyer on these speakers, and they really shine on some of my sweet spot stuff. I just listened to about three albums each by Police and Pretenders. YES, Sir!
Here in the states. at least the Rocky Mountain West, Wharfedales are not a common sighting. In fact, it really shocked me when I saw the badge on the back.
when I was over in the UK for my best friend's second wedding, ca. 1989,
I passed the Hammersmith Odeon on the train, and wished I would have stopped to see it. Next time I go over, I make it more impulsive. If I recognize it, I go look at it.
But hey, I saw Wimbledon, so I have no complaints.
None about the Wharfedales, either.
Going to at long last hook up the JBL10 sub.
That should augment a lot of speakers, including the DQ-10s when I roll em out...
