I bought a Sony SCD-C2000ES today. It's a SACD changer. By far the best cdp I've ever owned. Should be in by weeks end.

i almost went the SACD route, if not for the limitations of available titles within my narrow preference of music, i probably would have. i'd still like to try it though.

I have a Yamaha SACD DVD player in my HT setup so I didn't really need one for 2 channel. The price was right however and these units seem to get pretty good reviews.

does anyone know if DAC's and SACD go together?

Most SACD players will come equipped with a S/P DIF or TOS digital audio output. The problem is the S/P DIF and TOS outputs will only work when you are playing standard CDs in the player. sad.gif

The SACD signal is a 1 bit Direct Stream Digital (DSD) signal not PCM like "normal cd's", that is why is not compatible with S/P DIF or TOS. From what i know, at this time there is no digital output standard for 1 bit Direct Stream Digital digital audio so no high definition digital audio outputs are supplied. sad.gifsad.gif

Or, you can use some Direct Stream Digital to Linear PCM Conversion like this one:

And, an interesting reading:

A quote from SA-CD.net : "Currently, more than 13 million Super Audio CD compatible players are in circulation worldwide and this figure will grow exponentially once the first Super Audio CD compatible PlayStation systems become available."

The lowest price I could find online was $379. $399 is the norm. I found mine on Ebay, new, for $237. The seller seems to be very reputable.

Clint,

I've not had too much experience with SACD or DVD-A, so I've been loyal to a good redbook CD.

I have heard the Pink floyd DTS 5.1 version of Dark Side of the Moon, and enjoyerd it, but still question if it's a bit gimmicky to me.

How about you? What's your preference?

Maybe we should open another topic abut this subject...
Anyway, my preferences goes to simple cds. That's why i'm commited in making from the Nad 5425 - one of their great cdps from '92 - with the old MASH converter, a very good cdp...
Let's see if i can....

Imho, i always find sacd sounded awful distorted in the upper freqs. especially on sibilants of the female singer, and on cymbal sounds from the drum kit. Below, lets say 8000Hz, sacd sounds more open, airy, musically natural, and dynamic than normal 16/44 CD.

A friend of mine who has a Marantz sacd is so entranced by the improved musical naturalness below 8000 Hz that they fail to notice the gross distortion above 8000 Hz on certain musical notes.
Imo, the present DSD-SACD sampling rate is only good enough to cover music up to 8000 Hz. This is simply unacceptable as a high fidelity medium. It's like having a speaker system without any tweeter... soundt/eek4.gif

Sorry cubdog, don't want to hijack the topic... biggrin.gif

No problem. I also prefer standard cds. SACDs are like a guilty pleasure. A little goes along way.

BTW, the new changer is very nice. I notice improved bass, clarity, and a better soundstage It sounds like a veil has been lifted from my speakers. The difference is especially noticeably with my Cornwalls and to a lesser degree with the DQ10s.

It's always a thrill when we can find pleasure in a new unit.
Have fun. soundt/thumbup.gif
