Having picked up three sets of speakers (of which I can only recall two rolleyes.gif ) I'm a bit speakered out. But, while on the way to the market I decided to stop at a nearby thrift. Walked to the rear where the electronics are and saw a vinyl covered tower and as I got closer saw the "Ohm" badge. No other marks. Drivers were perfect. Looks like box was mounted as there were three sets of holes (entirely through one side blink.gif ) in a pattern. Ohms have a good rep so I hauled it up front and went to look for the mate. Found it. Some idiot had tried to look at the tweeter and had almost busted it off (probably same person that steals head shells by snapping them off instead of just unscrewing) and same set of holes. Bought them for a discounted $5.93 out the door. Pays to be nice to the help biggrin.gif. Tested them out late at night with a Pioneer SX-828 and they worked soundt/banana.gif. I was in a small area so audition was not optimal. Very low clear bass response and nice vocals. It has a 10" butyl driver with a felt dust cap that has a hole in he center. 12" rear passive and an "Supertweeter." I am really want to give them an honest listen so I need to free a spot. Find very little personal experiences about these. A pic from the Ohm site.

those are supposed to be some very sweet sounding full range speakers. $6 is a fantastic score!

hakka26- 07-29-2008
Front and rear. They are 4 ohm of which I have been remiss to amass too many.

what a score

hakka26- 07-29-2008
Correction: 8" woofer and 10" passive.

You know, I had a pair of those once. I had an old Stereo Review bible that listed those at $800/pair. I didn't believe that cause they didn't sound like $800 speakers. I never really did like them so I gave them to my brother-in-law and he still has them.

What do they sound like?

hakka26- 07-29-2008
How is an $800 speaker suppose to sound soundt/confused-smiley-013.gif? FWIW MSRP was $995 in mid '90s.

I would expect a full range speaker of that price range to sound pretty good, it would have its own sound characteristics, with sound stage, easy mids, blah blah blah.

Elroy,
Actually, my question was directed at damage's post. Can't say for sure I know how an $800 speaker sounds but I do know how a $5.93 speaker sounds like biggrin.gif.

I dunno how they sound, butthey sure are neat looking.

Any complaints with them, besides the 4 ohm impedance?

hakka26- 07-30-2008
Had only a brief audition. I found them to be pleasing. I pushed them a little bit and there was no distortion at either end. As with many rear passive systems they maybe sensitive to placement. Plugging the small holes should also make a difference. As has been the case it is difficult to find the room for optimal placement.

Not complaining about 4 ohm just need to be careful which units I use for power. Had a small prob with the 6 ohm Jamos and a Sony though it is rated for 6 ohm.

Thanks, Hakka!

That's the point.
I just swapped out my Adcom CD player for a Harman Kardon 8450
that I picked up at a garage sale for $15.

It's absolutely pristine, and I could probably sell the remote for 3X that.
I really like the sound and will be bringing the entech 203.2 number cruncher out of the bedroom system (it sounds AWESOME with the toshiba cd I have in there) for a -*test*-('") run. The Entech and Adcom were not compatible.

Anyway, I think the Harman Kardon probably cost $500 bux new, maybe more. Was it worth that? I guess if I had five bills to spare, I would say probably.
Is it worth $15? indubitably.

Were the Ohms worth a grand? maybe not, but Hakka is no dummy. He got them for ... WHAT?

POINT-6 cents on the dollar????

I just turned up the main system, (hafler transnova p3000, polk M-7) without the entech, to high volume, about 10 o'clock on the dial, and it was CLEAN.

I'm pretty sure those Ohms are a MAJOR SCORE, considering you got them for the price of a supersized cholesterol bomb.

bytheby, I wanna thank you for that picture of Ann-Marget for all of these years.
I have always thought of her as a paradigm. Or felt that way...

Nice grab on the H/K. I've only seen one of their CDP's and it had taken quite a hit. Too bad clean no nonsense look. What I enjoy about this pastime is the high amount of enjoyment that can be had at a relatively low cost. If there is one thing I learned early in these forums is to recognise quality either by build or the names that people drop. Even with a loose tweeter I knew these were a no-brainer for the price. I think I have found a workable spot for these by the fireplace (at least 'til the holidays) so I'm going to work on that and see what type of review I can offer. Space is a premium.

You're probably right about your remote. I look for remotes whenever possible as some are worth as much as the units.

Yes, Ann-Margret is a babe. One of the few who kept her looks even after the accident.
