When they first came out, in the 90´s, 1 bit conversion DACs, or Bitstream, as they were also know, had a mellower sound than the previous Multibit DACs, and avoided the usual metallic, thin sound of the first generation CDP´s.

Unfortunately, Bitstream also curtailed the dynamics of the music in many peoples opinion, along with the frequency extremes. Bitstream was often accused of lacking both deep bass and higher treble.

Sillicon Valley, kept working, thank goodness, and soon after the market witnessed the emergenge of improved 18 and 20 bit DACs, along with better filtering and anti-jitter chips.
