How does the Paradigm Studio 20 V4 comapre to other bookshelf speakers in the $1k range?

I haven't heard them but everyone that hears the EPOS 12.2s love them. Take a listen to them before you buy.

I own a pair of Paradigm Reference Studio 20 - from the 90's - and i love them. Awesome midrange timbral accuracy, superb detail resolution and a low end performance even at low levels. They are rear ported and very sensitive.

Imo, Epcos, Triangle, Aurum Cantus,Usher or even the last B&W bookshelves are also great alternatives at that price range.
