Great to see a thread about the DQ-10. I have a matched set and I am using ADCOM separates. ADCOM might not be the BEST but the 555II fills them nicely. I want to ask Ed where he found the Hi-Fi Tuning Fuses. Do others agree that this is a worthwhile upgrade? Just added 2 Velodyne ULD-18s to fill the bottom end. Nice vintage setup.

I purchased my fuses from the online retailer, The Cable Company, but a Google search will yield a number of sources, some of which are a little less expensive (by a couple of dollars).

Such a search will also yield the Stereophile review of the fuses, resulting in them being labeled a "recommended component."

I too am using an Adcom amp, the GFA-5800, along with a Parasound PLD-1100 preamp with my DQ-10's, and that seems to be a good combination for them. I supplement them with a Definitive technology PF15TL+ sub, which stomps the crap out of the Dahlquist DQ-1W. Much as I love the DQ-10's, bass has never been their strong point, and they must be augmented with a sub, and a good one too.

The GFA-5800 has a quite a few fuses in it, some or all of which I'll eventually replace with Hi-Fi Tuning fuses, but first I need to be sure I select the approrpiate replacements. Given the differencee the fuses made in the DQ-10's, and the positive reviews on the fuses, the amp should greatly benefit, or so I hope!

I have replaced glass-body fuses in some of my gear with ceramic-body fuses and realized some improvement. IMHO, one other thing that we must do from time to time is polish the pins on our mains plugs and renew our fuses every now and then (or turn them around in their holders to clean them). wink.gif

i had some dq-10s over 10 years ago, they were pretty good speakers....... but i blew them to pieces. literally, the entire crossover network melted... hehe i think i even blew out a midrange and tweeter (or two, or three)

My DQ-10s have seen some changes, but I recently took a step back. I replaced the Phillips cone midrange with a Dayton 5" aluminum midbass with rubber surround. I believe that it improved the midbass and lower midrange, but integrated well most importantly of all. Although I have 2 pair of refoamed original woofers, I've opted for 1978 vintage 12" woofers of similar construction, that is paper cone and foam surround, and again they perform and integrate well. Since an idle mind is, well you know, I removed the tweeters and piezos and replaced them with Morel MDT-10s. I lived with this configuration for months, and the Morel is a very good performer. Curiosity got the best of me again, and I reinstalled the original tweeters and piezos. Unless I have to replace them for reasons of failure, they're now staying put. The great pacing and ambience is so apparent that would have required a total redesign for the Morels to match. Change isn't necessarily improvement, especially in such a complex design.

I concur with you.
As far as I know seems very difficult to a mod change facts of physics and/or acoustics in such a design like DQ-10s.
