Been a long hot day. I had to drive out to the desert to pick up some car parts. Little over 50 miles one way but miserably hot and windy and traffic was a pain. Got home late in the afternoon and spent a little time checking out the parts. Since it was Monday I thought I would hit a couple thrifts. Decided to reverse my usual route. Walked in and took a slow stroll to the back where the electronics are. As I approached I saw a new set of large speakers sitting on the floor. Twenty feet away I saw the Pioneer HPM-100 badge . Almost ran the rest of the way as there were several people looking around. Popped the grills and found all drivers were in perfect shape. 200 watt version. Cabs were a little scratched and one has a quarter size veneer chip. Forgot how heavy they are so I took the grills and ran to get a cart. As I loaded them up one of the workers came by and said those just hit the floor and were probably still warm from sitting outside. Pumped him to see if anything came in with them but he didn't seem to think so. Rolled them around the store and then up to the register. They were marked $5.99 each but with my discount coupon it was $10.48 out the door . They've had a pair of Thrusters, $7.99 and Technics, $9.99 (among others) sitting around for weeks This is my second set. The first are the 100 watt. I'm starting to feel like a speaker hog. Needed a nap when I got home. Still in the back of the car.

That's like finding money

Not my favourite speaker but I can experiment stacking them. Could have left them for someone else but a couple weeks ago I was there and it looked like a swapmeet seller was there also with a cartful of BPC. I watched as he took the grill off a Fisher and beat on the woofer like a conga to test it.

With what HPM's bring the $10.48 can be turned into something else that you may be after.
I had a pair for a while, they weren't bad but I find my tastes change and have found other speakers that I prefer.

if you eq them they will sound nice, but not too shabby if you flip them either.

so when do you suppose i'm gonna find a $10.00 pair if PIONEER DSS-9?

HPMs would make a killer HT setup I betcha.
Hakka, you are a lucky fella. I must meet you one day just to rub your belly for luck.

I wasn't making an offer to buy or sell in the thread. There is a set of DSS-5's local to me. Since Mac likes the DSS series so much, he would be the one to ask if I should get them.
hakka26- 07-02-2009
Don't have any experience or knowledge of the DSS-5's, but if they were something I were looking for I would be all over them for the price if I could work out the logistics.

I got a reply from MacGyver and a brouchure photo of the DSS-5, THANKS! (The speakers in his photo above are the DSS-9 with the ribbon tweeter which would be a no brainer buy.) Cabinets are solid like the HPM's. The price came down to $30 so they are getting tastier.

Sounds like a good grab, but if you are like me where to put them, I have speakers stacked on speakers now needing a good home.

The DSS-5 is interesting but not as well known or controversial as the HPM-100. The DSS-5 likely sounds better than the similar HPM-500 or HPM-60 but because the DSS line is virtually unknown, they would be a tough sell. I'm still tempted everytime I see them...

Oops, my error. Didn't catch the different model numbers. I have a set of minty HPM-500 stacked away. They were cheap, $5.00 or under IIRC
