When my mentor was in gradute school his first year, he worked in an inorganic chemistry lab that generated alot of sodium metal waste. He once asked his boss what to do with it and the guy basically shrugged him off. He threw in one of the campus lakes, where it proceeded to explode and release a cloud of sodium hyroxide. It destroyed every car's paint job within reach. Gotta luv chemistry.

i wont be trading in my level-A suit any time soon, but i do miss the good old days.

it'll put holes in your clothes too. also good for plenty of very very naughty things. the money turns green b/c of it's nickel content, pennies will turn blue. Can be used as alternative to what I've stated earlier

Lord almighty.

In the 60´s they had just as much fun with only one toy: LSD. laugh.gif

Hence the phrase, "Does it pass the Acid Test?"

In HS chem, a guy whose name shall remain forever shrouded by mystery,
okay his name was Larry Greiss, decided he'd pour some acids, whatever the strongest stuff they gave us, and this was 30 years ago, so it was still pretty strong, into a beaker. He decided to start tossing in metals. I think the experiment ended when he tossed in some magnesium. Might have been manganese. Or both.

It was like a scene from a B movie, him running around yelling,
"MY EYES! MY EYES! I'M BLIND!" Fortunately he was wearing glasses,
and perhaps safety glasses, so he wasn't any blinder than before it blew up in his face. It was what scientists might call a "random experiment."

My wire didn't do it.

Did you see any bubling? It is possible that you have aluminum coated wire. I'll repeat the conditions at my house sometime next week and take a pic or two. I know I owe you guys a few editorials but chaos has ensued as of late. This would not take long for me. You might try and cut down on the peroxide. Say 10 vineagar to 1 peorxide by volume. Helps if your using clear vineagar but that should be obvious.

Magnesium reacts pretty well with air or acids. It is pyrophoric and will burst into flame if heated. I used to use it as a fuse for thermite demos. One time I made a thermite demo that was a little bit bigger than normal. I thought I saw God b/c my sigh of vision turned completely white.

I meant my wire didn't cause the explosion.............. rolleyes.gif
