Replacing bulbs w/ LEDS, how's it properly done?

I've seen people do it straight, but would imagine it will kill the bulb, or keep it too bright.

I've heard of using step-down transformers, but all I see are these big, massive units- not any tiny little buggers.

My Denons run dark. The lamps are pricey for 'em, and don't last long.

So, my thought is to use LEDs. The LEDs run three to a panel, and a total of two panels, or six LEDs.

The boards are small- like two sticks of Wrigley's or Blackjack gum end to end.

Of course, a pair of panels is missing from one of my Denons, so a trip to Radio Shack to buy the supplies to build one may be in order.

But is there a small stepdown transformer? How does one figure it out?

Also seems one could use a resistor to run the LEDs.

When I had my Pioneer receiver, the Stereo indicator bulb blew. It was an 8v, 35mA weird thing that I wasn't about to try to find. I replaced it with an orange LED and a resistor and it all worked like a charm. Just as bright, cooler running, longer lasting.

Next time the meter bulbs blow in my Yamaha amp I'm going the LED route.

BTW, avoid blue leds! I personally hate them...
