Sorry, I dont use a template. Sure I have a stable of songs that I initially use to get a feel for a product. However, quite often thse songs dont get worked into my review. I would think people would get bored hearing about the same 30 songs over and over. However I do try to find music in my library that highlights the strengths or limitations of a product. I know this doesnt help you regarding a template. But I listen to these specific areas:

1. midragne purity
2.wide spectrum tonal balance
3.imaging and soundstage
3.dynamics
4.bass response

Thanks Mister Pig (thats hard to say smile.gif, I was looking for something from you guys that I could hand over to these guys/gals. Not a Genesis/Gabriel/Hackett fan eh smile.gif I can think of 30 songs I can listen over and over, not quite what we listen for to show off systems, but then again I make my judgments at 7 on the volume knob, my zone.

Ian:
Creating a reference set of music is pretty personal. In your case I would make up four to five demo discs to fit different genre's. I have two discs now as I have found more great tracks to -*test*-('") equipment with.

If you want disc suggestions, here are a few:
Donald Fagan: Morph the Cat, clear clean bass
Allison Krause (anything, her voice is so pure)
Spyro Gyra: Catching the Sun, catchy jazz
Gustov Holst: The Planets, Telarc disc
Vivaldi: The Four Seasons, Telarc Disc
Sean Harkness: Aloft, acoustic Guitar
Joe Jackson: Night and Day
