I had to drive across town to check on some supplies for an upcoming job. Since the supplier was down the street from one of my prime SA's I decide to drop in. Strolled into the back and saw a set of speakers. Hello...turned out to be a set of BIC Venturis dry.gif . But, what was that sitting behind them. Yanked out the Revox A-77 in primo shape. Didn't recognise it because of the cover. Price indicated that there were 2 Pcs.. Well, didn't see anything else and it was also missing the cord so I took up front. Found ou that the BIC's were the other "pieces." I convinced them that to sell me the R2R alone for half price and got it for $19.50 soundt/banana.gif.
I didn't shy away because when I first started this hobby 2 years ago one of my first pieces was a rarer suitcase A-77 with its original box and reels for $15. So, I knew I could power this one up. Well, the issue is that the buttons won't stay depressed. I need to hold them down. I put some headphones on and I do get clear music but it is obvious that the reel is moving too slow so I know that it does need a belt or two (I hope these use belts). The counter works (my other does not). Guess I need to buy a manual as I have to find out how to open this puppy up. I have a feeling this must have been a drop off as I can't see SA keeping the cover on so I plan on checking back for the cord (then I won't need to mod) or some reels.

Have a feeling the cover alone may be worth more than what I paid.

i'll bet you are right. is it just the pic's or is that thing enormous?

hakka26- 05-08-2007
Actually it's not that big, 16x14, but weighs almost 40#. My other A-77 is larger due to onboard speakers. Also got the genuine Revox NAB hubs, in mint shape, with this one. My other came with what looks like nice aftermarket NABs.

Hakka,

I have decided you do not exist. You are not for real. biggrin.gif

No one can get a Revox A-77 for $20, even if it has issues. blink.gif

Well, I thought it was a tad expensive since I bought the other in the box for $15 rolleyes.gif . I forgot the reels and when I went back the next day to get them bought the Sansui orphan for a $1. As I said, the counter belt does need to be replaced. tongue.gif This one is a bit wider.

In its day, the Revox A-77 had some strong competition from first the Tandberg 64X, and then the Tandberg 6000. While the Revox is a better unit mechanically, with three motors and solenoid operation as opposed to either Tandberg using a "joystick" control, and a single motor, the Tandbergs were infinitely better when recording at 3 3/4 ips than the Revox was at 7 1/2 ips. Unfortunately, the 6000, while "improving" on many features of the 64x workhorse was an extremely troublesome unit, at least in its first year of production.

Ahh, memories, memories, memories.... rolleyes.gif

I've heard that he early A-77 had a few problems. Mine must be a slightly later version as they have the roller bearing on the supply side spool—cures some type of noise problem. Can't recall some of the other shortcomings.

Well, this is awfully embarrasssing rolleyes.gif but it appears that I have the user and service manuals. And, when in doubt read the instructions. It seems that there is a "Remote Control" jumper and if it is not installed it is like having pre/main jumpers missing in that button functions will not work. It must have come out because someone taped it to the front of the unit and once I re-installed it, well sonovagun, it operates perfectly. soundt/banana.gif I do have to adjust the tension on the pinch roller as it is running a shade slow and when I press up on it the sound seems dead on. Don't hate me biggrin.gif.

Hell amigo,
I truly wish you would come across one for $100.00 and really show me up. smile.gif I've been lucky but, like everyone else, have missed a lot of things also. I reallly want to read about other members finding things as well. Good luck to all.
