one time the Model 5 was considered one of the finer amplifiers out there. I ahve the cahnce to acquire an early Model 5(non balanced). How does it compare to the current amplifier offerings? What yould you consider to be a fair market value? Curious to hear your thoughts and opinions.

Congrats. That's one great classic amp, in the same league of Krell or Mark Levinson.
2.000 USD ?

Havent bought it yet. Matter of fact, am going to show some restraint. I have a pair of Eminent Technology LFT8B showing up for review. If I love the speakers, then I am going to look for a SS amp for them. Will use a pair of Monarchy SM 70 PRO on them to start.

Well I did it. Brought home the Model 5 today. Its an iron fist in a velvet glove. Power and control, after all its a beast of an ampliifer. Yet it sounds more like a tube amp without alot of romantic warmth. I can see some people calling it dark, but in my mind it doesnt have that "hi-fi" sonic spectacular sound. This is a refined amp, plain and simple.
High end never goes out of style, and from what I hear its still a fantastic amp. SOTA amps from this time period of late 80's adn early 90's represent a great bargain.
As far as I am concerned, you arent going to get better sound than what I paid for this beastie.

"Its an iron fist in a velvet glove" i like a lot that analogy.
Congrats!

We need some pics of that iron baby.
Have fun.
definitely what Alvaro said, pics would be great.
Congrats! on landing a world-class amplifier, John!
Great to hear it's at home, working, and bringing you much pleasure.
I wish you years of good luck with it!
I'm not sure if you have it or not, but I found the manual online at HI-FI Engine, a free download.
