I had a similar problem. When I got a Yamaha B-1 amp back from EchoWars the right channel kept dropping out. Sometimes after a few minutes, and sometimes longer. I was convinced it was the multi-pin connector between the amp and the meter panel that clips onto the front of the amp because when I disconnected and reconnected them both channels would work fine. The problem turned out to be the interconnect cable for the R channel between the preamp and the amp. Apparently the slight jostling from messing with the amp & meter panel would re-establish the continuity of the IC. It was maddening.

To find out if it's one of the IC's, swap the IC cables L to R & R to L. If the right channel drops out you've got an intermittent connection on one of your IC's.

I swapped my grant fidelity ic's with a set of kimbers and it was the same.

Could be a failing capacitor too, check for a bulge on the top of the caps, which indicates it has failed. A cap in this condition will work for a bit then stop as it sees fit.

Good luck.

I suggest swapping out the gear one piece at a time so you can identify which piece is faulty.

I hooked my old cr1020 at home, and the amp works fine, its in the pre, we swapped cables at work to see if each channnel worked on the amp and both worked fine. every component at home yesterday worked, except the pre amp. so it is the preamp that is rebelling against me.

That's a bummer. Did Scott give you a warranty?

I wouldn't usually send a late 1980's TOTL Yamaha preamp out for refurbishing, but since there's a problem I would have it refurbished, not just repaired. However, I'd only trust it to a few techs, with my first choice being EchoWars. EchoWars has a hellacious backlog, so it would take a while for him to get to it. Another tech I would trust is Fred Longworth, co-owner of Audio Classics in San Diego. I think his turn-around time is pretty short.

Another vote for Echowars, but like stated, it's a long wait, I am still waiting to get my Adcom in to him.

I took the pre-amp in to northewest audio, I gave the tech a copy of the service manual and put him to work.

We are all keeping out collective fingers crossed that this ends well.
