his shop was recomended to me by a member on this site, and john the tech seemed, like well its electronics, its what I do, its what I have been doing for 40years, so I am pretty confident all will turn out well.

So I got My pre-amp and adcom back from Northwest Audio. and the owner said that he couldnt find anything wrong with the pre-amp, his tech turned it on, worked all the switches and knobs to make sure, I dont know but that is what he said he does everytime he gets unit, thats the first step, and he couldnt find anything wrong.

sooooo,

I take it home it works great for about a week and bam the channel goes out again, damn, I shut it off, go in the kitchen to cook some food for the grubmunchers, and think screwit, I am going to listen to 1 channel low just for some background noise.
and after about 3 minutes of the preamp being on, the other channel fires up and works perfectly. That i believe is why the tech didnt find anything, there is some electrical something or other that is probably going bad.

good news is that it still works, will ask the tech what he thinks about the symptoms. what do you guys think just off the top of your heads.

Sorry to hear the outcome wasn't good.
Was wondering how things were coming on it.
Intermittent shorts are the hardest to find.

speakerman1- 03-15-2009
When you leave it on this time does it cut out after awhile? I know on aircraft the 1st thing we would check would be our grounds when we had an intermittent problem. It is like my electricty professor always said it is PFM. Pure Freaking Magic.

Based upon your description of the problem, there are a few possiblities.Imho could be a bad solder connection. It may not look like a bad connection, but it is there. Or, a bad output protection relay...
One simple way to diagnose is to run the amplifier open until the problem recurred and to simply tap the relay's box or little taps on the top of the caps. If the sound came on then you'll know where the problem is. wink.gif
Good luck.

Once the channel "warms up" so to speak, it works perfectly, I think what clint was saying is probably what is going on. I'm in no hurry,

I will ask John at nw audio when he fininshes tuning up the teac x-2000r, he told me that since he couldnt find anything to let him know if it messed up, and he would take care of it. I feel comfortable with this audio shop, he seems to know what he is doing.

If tapping doesn't find the culprit get some freeze spray (or compressed air). After the preamp has warmed up, spray each component on the offending channel, if that doesn't find it try the solder joints. If cold operation causes the problem cooling each component back off should find and isolate the problem.

the channel started cutting out after it warmed up, it used to need to warm up, then it played just fine, oh well, Im not going to screw with it. I will just take it up to the shop, thanks for the input, I am pretty sure you guys are right with whats wrong with it, thanks for the input, I will pass on your thoughts to the John the tech.

the tech asked me the same thing as you guys did, he did have me run a tset my tape deck on record on tape 1,2,3 to see if the problem was in those paths, but it wasnt, and I told him another sympton, "the bad channel being kinda staticky," and then John mentioned that that narrows it down for him to use his "freeze spray" to find the bad component.

So when I he finished the Teac x2000, I will take the pre amp back up there to have it fixed. its about 70miles round trip through the heart of seattle, btw i hate driving to seattle. anyway. sooon I should have the whole shebang running. cant wait

You could get lucky and be a bad solder joint.
And you're right about the drive.
I live in Tacoma and thats a hard part of Seattle to get into conveniently.
I need to take my tape deck back up there, one of the wheels is going bad.
Not looking forward to it.

This is what my 6th sense is telling me is the culprit too. Have the tech try to isolate the area, then zoom in on the offending piece. Good Luck!! Great stuff ya got, I'm jealous!!

it just hit me just how complementary the 1988 JVC HR-S8000U S-VHS would actually be alongside those beauties:

If I get the gumption to drive 110 miles through Seattle tomorrow, I might take the preamp up to the tech, I have been putting up with the bad channel, it works when the system warms up, then shuts off when it gets too warm.

I got a set of canare IC's from speakerman, which I love, well not speakerman but the IC's, anyway if I can get a couple hrs without the channel shutting down I will post my thoughts on the new IC's. short note, they did make an improvement in sound over the GF IC's.
