what did those Yamaha NS1000's go for when new? Why do they hold their value so well?

i dont know what they retailed for. the 1000M usually go for $1000 or more, the 1000's like the ones posted for a little less. they hold their value because they are a damn fine speaker in the eyes of many.

The use of Beryllium in the drivers (a hard greyish metal) is considered superior to many other materials (arguably), and results in a great driver.

Beryllium is not commonly used any more, for the fact it's difficult to work with, and long term exposure via breathing it can lead to breathing issues (lung scarring- sometimes permanent) and possibly cancer.

Overall, a very good speaker.
