Composed of former Tuareg rebels, which reached the end of Tombuctu rebellion in the early 90s with electric guitars and Kalachnikovs, this group from Mali – Africa makes use of his music and poetry to express dissatisfaction in the light of the failure of modern society through songs with original modern arrangements of today’s guitar playing.
Winners of the award for best group of world music in the African continent by the BBC Radio in 2005, Tinariwen marked presence in the Africa Live 'festival for the UN to fight malaria, which took place in that same year in Senegal.
Particularly related to the exile of the people and the nomadic Tuareg Berbers of the Sahara desert, Tinariwen - in English, empty spaces - call to political awareness to issues such as exile, the repression in Mali or the extradition of people from Algeria.
On the Tuareg tradition, the Tinariwen are influenced by Bob Marley and Bob Dylan, as well as the rebels of the Moroccan new wave, Nass El Ghiwane. Composed of ten of the best and most famous elements and composers/performers of the Tuareg community of today, the Tinariwen sing the exile and the opposition.
After a presence in Rosskilde Festival and Womad Rivermead Festival, the group from Mali recorded 'Amassakoul' a record that has been considered a "work-of-art" and since its publishing in 2004 has not left the top European music for two consecutive years.
Tinariwen helped organize the Festival of the Desert, an annual event that leads to North Africa fans and celebrities from around the world, to give special attention to the Tuareg people, and therefore their ambassador’s music, the Tinariwen.
Composed of up-beat songs with real and deep chorus the album “Aman Iman” appears to be more careful and polished than the great 'Amassakoul'. Known as the first group to merge the traditional Tuareg music with electric guitars in 1979, Tinariwen are still led by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, the founder member of the group and owner of a powerful voice and a distinct style of unique guitar playing.
A powerful, hypnotic and beautiful Afrobeat album.
