Saw a garage sale ad late yesterday for a Friday/Saturday sale. Mentioned stereos and speakers. It's about a 40mi. RT but miss one light and it's 20 miles of bad road. Decided to go late today and go there about 3:00pm. As I pulled up I saw some large speakers. Heil? Nope, got out and found they were Ohm A's blink.gif. Have never seen these before. Further up I see another set of boxes. I wasn't going to bother looking as someone had put some pipe mounts and drilled a hole to run wire on the sides ohmy.gif. Decided to pull the grills anyway. WTF JBL L100's! Asked how much for the speakers. "The big one's or little ones?" I said the big. "Twenty-five each!" Well, then how much for the little ones? "Twenty for the pair." How about $60 for all? SOLD!!! soundt/banana.gif soundt/bluebanana.gif Unfortunately, took me two trips in the CRX. Tweeter foams were redone by Orange County Speakers (hope they did it right) and look new. Grills are excellent couple nicks on the cab bottoms. Heavy suckers. And, BIG. May be sitting in the driveway overnight as I now have less than zero space.

A pic of the group

The tweeters.

Congrats! You have the O.C. covered! Those look like Walsh tweeters??

dingus- 09-06-2008

Rat44- 09-07-2008

Thanks for replies.
Sam, yes Walsh tweeters.
Dingus, got some FRS-9's a little while ago but these are an entirely different animal.

Been doing some research and apparently these are the big brothers to the more common Ohm F. The "A"s were all hand made and were prototypes to challenge K-Horns and their ilk. Mods were made that increased their efficiency. There were/are a couple upgrades available and I would like to find if these were so done. They retailed from $3995 to $6500 in the early '70s. blink.gif The seller and residence did not look at all like someone who would have these. All I saw were late '80s black receivers and amps. When I returned I asked if there was any silver stuff and told no just black. Doesn't mean thatt here wasn't a Mac there though unsure.gif . Oh well. I did put a meter on the JBL's and one Ohm—so far so good. I guess when I get the chance I will swap up my week old setup with the Ohm FRS and sub in the "A"s. Using a Yamaha CR-1020, Pioneer CT-F1000 and Micro Seiki DD-20. Might go with a Kenwood Basic M1A and the Adcom 400 pre. My second set of L100's, the first were free. biggrin.gif

A revelation and more info. Apparently Ohm used "A" labels on "F" units (cheesy way to use up old labels) and I have a set of "F"s. Now the question is are these 4 ohm or 8/6 ohm as the label indicates? I imagine the meter will tell. Retail was $900-$3995. No info on what determined price. Still, can't complain for $40.

that ohm score is one of legend, whether As or Fs...

I'd have wet my drawers...

Heya, Hakka.

I have a "Sound for the Pound" philosophy in that kind of "shopping." To put it into amp/receiver terms, if can nail down 150wpc of Hafler power for 111 bux, or 85wpc of Optonica for 10 bux, it's a screaming deal you won't regret. I'm just imagining how much sound that 65 bux would generate at once. I'm imagining a lot of sound.

Great score!

I couldn't just look at them anymore. One still sits by the front door so I got some long runs of wire and set up an H/K PM660 integrated and Kenwood cdp. It was late at night and I had the H/K nearly in the 12 o'clock position. The Ohms were just beginning to breathe. The sound stage was spectacular and space filling.Crisp highs and smooth lows. H/K began running warm. Realised that since it was sitting on the carpet he bottom grill was blocked.soundt/doh.gif Well, as the Yamaha CR-1020 is in place I hooked it up and used the Micro Seiki DD-20 tt as a source. Still smooth but it looks like I better get the Kenwood Basic M1A in place as these really are power hungry. They are not bad at low volume but I see them asking for more. Can't really offer much more opinion until better set up. I also bought new speaker posts for the L-100's. After I put them back to normal I could always stack them with the other L-100's rolleyes.gif. All in all not a bad buy so far. Everything is in working condition.

I fell of the wagon and scored as well. My score was cheaper but would trade it for yours.

For $10 total...

So now i am in the loop in a place that recycle electronics. i ahve an in and can any speakers for $5 per and any amp etc. for $10. No real resoning here and it pick and choose. I was so stoked when i walked out with these for $10. But last week I got a "The Fisher" mono tube amp, $10. Did not need it but figured it was worth some coin. Slapped it on Ebay and WOW $340 !!!!! A solid $300 after shipping. WOW.

Nope, still have it an use it all the time. Love it. That thing powering my huge marantz imperial 9's sounds better than it has a right to.
