Turntable weights- anyone use them?

I've got a plastic one, that slides down the shaft, essentially locking the disc to the platter.

But I've also seen those sexy brass or chrome plated, weighted models. Very sexy.

I don't doubt they work, but I've a few concerns.

Does the added weight affect either the motor, or the bearings?

Are they wise to use on a Direct Drive TT?

Any opinions?

Paul, like you I currently use clamps, in my avatar you can see the Mitchell clamp on my Fairchild, I keep watching for a Thorens weight because I too love the looks and beleive I may gain some other benefits on my belt driven. As far as affecting a direct drive it may cause a little more strain getting started but I wouldn't think it wouldn't be significant. A weight adds weight and mass to the platter in addition to holding the lp to the platter, adding weight/mass to the platter in affect makes it more like a flywheel more of a benefit on belt driven to asssist in a steady constant speed. One concern on suspension tables is the additional weight can put undo stress on the suspension, not the end othe world but would need to be adjusted for.

I got my Rek-O-Kut weight several years ago from these guys and I couldn´t be happier. Much easier to use than locking types. smile.gif
I used it with my Denon and Pioneer DD turntables and had no problems at all. It will definitely cause troubles to sprung chassis TT´s without adjustment. The Michell Record Clamp might work better in these cases.
Belt Drive TT´s might need a whisker longer to reach full speed, but since the mass is concentrated around the spindle it won´t exact too much extra effort on any decent motor.

Well, after this thread in I ended up making the mistake of doing some looking and ended up buying a weight, I have always thought these looked so cool, guess they got me, I did find a good price on it though.

Jim,

I´ve been fighting with myself not to buy one of those " Stabilizers " for some years now.
I don´t know if they work better than mine, but they sure look out of this world. rolleyes.gif The box alone makes you lust for it, and it´s a Thorens, for chrissake. laugh.gif

Maybe one of these days...

BTW, may I ask how much you forked out for this one?

Nothing wrong with the link, Jim. soundt/thumbup.gif

We often point our members to sites selling what they enquire about. I´ve done it on several occasions myself.

I have one that came with an H/K belt drive tt that has some probs. It is large and quite heavy so I've never attempted to use it on other tt's.

If one had fallen off a shelf and hit me in the face, I wouldn't have known what it was. Or if it just sat on said shelf.

Since we are on the subject, does anybody have a TT with a suction system
to pull the record onto the TT platter?

on the nas, i tried the mitchel clamp, but it was a bit too tight for my spindle, so gave up using it. i got ontouch with a guy on one of the forums, and asked him to make me one, in solid brass. works a treat, and looks great.

I've seen those suction tables.

Put a few casters on 'em and maybe a hi-fi Rhoomba?

With some advice from friends - mostly concerning the weight - i'd made this clamp a few months ago. wink.gif

I use Herbie's SuperSonic Record Stabilizer on my Systemdek IIX suspended table. I am definitely lusting over the Thorens though. soundt/master.gif
