Hi,

Having introduced myself here on ST several days ago

http://www.sound-thinking.org/index.php?showtopic=5835

I have been asking for help & advice on all sorts of hifi related matters.

Well I'm at it again................Please could you advise me on a choice of turntable.

I haven't used one in over 30 years, I know, shame on me!! soundt/confused-smiley-013.gif

As I have already stated in some of my posts I always try to buy 'used' hifi so this would be the case in looking for a turntable.

I would like to spend no more than £300.00 on a turntable, inc arm & cartridge, if it's possible that is!!

For some unknown reason I have been looking at Rega Planar 3's.

So could I please ask, once again, for your help & guidance.

Thanks,

willie

PS, have just seen this on Ebay, what do you think!

i'm not a vinyl guy, but from what little i know about tt's the Rega's are good, and that Roksan looks very sweet!

Elroy- 09-14-2009
do you have any vinyl to play?

hakka26- 09-15-2009
That's a serious piece of equipment. Great TT, in the same class as the Linn LP12. Realise that it does not have a cartridge so about another £100 maybe.

I would allocate a little more . That beauty is worth it, and will respond to the best cartridge you can possibly afford.

Hi,

Elroy,

Yes I have some vinyl to play, mostly 60's, 70's & some from the 80's, but I want to get back into hifi & for me I have to be able to play all types of medium.

Thanks for your reply Elroy soundt/thumbup.gif

Hakka26,

I had not noticed that there wasn't a cartridge, thanks for pointing this out.

This means that I will now need some advice re a cartridge! soundt/confused-smiley-013.gif

I think you'll have to spend a lot more than £300.00 to get that beauty. soundt/drool.gif

Intentions were that the £100 is a starting point but then my exchange rate might be off. A Grado Gold is ~$225. IMHO that would be a good entry point. Not sure about the Shure M97 as it is quite different than my V15's but much cheaper. Then again if Mick added a phono pre-amp (if needed) well ....

TT was £795 MSRP around '92 and this one looks heavily upgraded. If it flies in under the radar it would be an excellent buy. Again IMHO.

Hi,

I have been scanning the net for info re the Roksan Xerxes Cognoscenti turntable when I came across a reference to this guy in the states,

http://www.generubinaudio.com/ soundt/thumbup.gif

Anyway I emailed him re the Roksan Xerxes Cognoscenti & this is his reply,

Mick,

The arm is ancient, the bearings probably shot besides the fact that model SME is not a very good arm.

There is no included power supply with the turntable. You'll need to try and find a used one that actually works. Not likely.

The top plinth on which the arm and platter are mounted is easy to see it is sinking.

I wouldn't buy that turntable for free.
Save yourself from a nightmare, buy yourself a new Rega P3-24, or a new Michell Tecnodec.

Amazed he can see all that from the pics but I imagine that there are some who can. I believe there is a power supply provided. I have a Thorens with the SME 3009 II arm and have heard nothing but good about it except for oem knife bearing wear. Then again, it was unused when I got it. The Rega he mentions is around $1000+. So maybe in your range.

I too have the SME arm and have had nothing but good results from it. "The top plinth on which the arm and platter are mounted is easy to see it is sinking." Looks like the suspension is getting weak, this would be repairable depending on which susppension system was used, the Thorens TD 160 has this issue, the analogdepartment site has good information to repair the Thorens.

In the Ebay auction mention is made of better power supply stability, I would send a question to the seller questioning as to the power supply, if it is or not included.

Owning a TT made in the late 50's, I am a big fan of the older TT's, Thorens, Fairchild, and Rek-O-Kut, with them comes some restore work but they are built rock solid.

Just my opinion. Happy hunting.

Very capable and well built. As stated they are widely used by djs and if that is the case it may have suffered some abuse or at the very least ,heavy wear.
