I'm about to start overhauling a pair of these. Can anyone can reccomend substitute drivers?

as a fan of these vintage speakers, i wouldnt recommend using anything other than original drivers. otherwise you'll end up with a sound that isnt of a W-70D, and that would be a shame as these are truly wonderful speakers.

i have a spare woofer from a W-60D that i would be willing to donate for the cause, but i have no idea if its the same woofer as used in the 70D.

Thats nice of you but it's for a customer. To me they are something i can mess with. i may just change the caps and see what happens.

the classic problem with these is the tweeters failing due to deterioration. the mids and woofers hold up pretty well. the woofers have pleated cloth surrounds that should outlast us.

I'll check that out. They say the caps do also.

Opened up the back. they had a pyle 8 inch pa speaker. a 12 inch gutiar amp speaker. the tweeter i have no clue.
I'm going with a Morel tweeter an Audax 8 inch and a Dayton 12 inch. I hope the xover is still original.

that will be a big improvement over what was in there, and could be better than the original sound.

I looked at the caps could not find the value does anyone know what it is. I think I read 2mf. But I'm not sure. Found the 5 inch to be rotted also so i'll put a Vifa in. I've tried to mach everything as much as possible. The spl will be around 90 with 8 ohm.

Well I've started 1 is gutted. These won't even ressemble the old speakers. I'm mounting the drivers on the outside. Changing all wire to a larger gage. And the caps to Solens. The owners going to have the cabinets redone in Piano finish. These speakers should kick.

Took pics. Will load when wife gets home. Waiting fot hardware to install drivers. Also had to enlarge some holes. I'm wondering if I should stuff with accustuff. I've got to wait till the 15th to get my vifas.
