With their first studio album “The art of Cherry” jazz trio Fat Kid Wednesday showed that Don Cherry was the founder element of their
music. The FKW trio—Michael Lewis on saxophone, Adam Linz on bass and JT Bates on drums—have been called musical storytellers,
and indeed a conversational style exists in the rhythm section, punctuated nicely with exhilarating licks from Lewis. The threesome takes
the crazy risk to "believe" in the virtues of the eternal regeneration of this music. Rejecting most of the options of those who carry on
playing jazz as a "game" (mannerist distanciation, academic deference), the Fat Kids find naturally some essential values (lyricism, vital
energy, commitment) and sign a music that is so strongly anchored in the present that it touches timelessness.

Eva Cassidy - Live at Blues Alley

Charivari- 02-18-2007
That was a worthwhile listen, I've finally managed to put my finger on why I don't like Eva Cassidy. She had an excellent voice, good song selection, and a great backup band, but none of it ever manages to draw me in and not make me want to immediately skip on to the next song. Now I know, it's her diva singing. Eva sang, but she didn't sing the songs, the lyrics and backup music just happened to coincide. She constantly did diva singing where she 'cut loose' the entire time throwing her voice all over the spectrum, but never in sync with the song. Whether the song requires subdued vocals or all out to set the mood, Eva ignored it and just did her, well, diva singing throughout. So, all the songs sound alike, no mood is created, and it's difficult to be drawn in. She was even worse about this than Mariah Carey. Though it's no surprise audiophiles are liking her, she has that "dead artist" mystique that automatically makes anyone seem 10x better than they were and she did the equivalent of vocal sound effect albums. Lots of ping pong and cool sounding tones and sound effects, but an empty listen. I'll take a singer who does the mood of a song excellently, but with a crappy voice over Diva Cassidy.

Now spinning:
