Kayah and Bregović - Self-titled

Don't they sang in some Emir Kusturica's pictures ?!
I'm a big fan of Kusturica's movies and also his music.

Yes and No. Bregovic has worked closely with Kusturica (and his No Smoking Orchestra) for the soundtracks of several of his films (Black Cat, White Cat; Arizona Dream, etc). However, Kayah is actually a Polish pop singer who paired up with Goran to put out this album of her singing his reworkings of old Gypsy songs. Supposedly, this album was number two on Poland's music charts for a while, though difficult to find around here.

It was through Emir Kusturica's films that I developed a taste for Bregovic's music. A while back, I enrolled in a small, overlooked course in the literature of the forumer Yugoslavia. I was the only student who wasn't a Serb or Croat by birth or ancestry, but fortunately most of the text was in English. Anyways, while it was a literature course, it was almost as much a film appreciation class. So, we ended up watching Dom za vesanje (Time of the Gypsies, Bila jednom jedna zemlja (Underground), and my comedic favorite, Crna macka, beli macor (Black Cat, White Cat. It was the latter that cemented my appreciation for Bregovic's music for it shows up all through the film.

In the end, though, this is a hard music to like (and even more so for the films) in this area as almost no one's even heard of either let alone bothered to see the films.

Poe - Haunted

Poe has a pretty good voice in an unconventional way, so it's no surprise she does a lot of guest singing around the genres. Supposedly she also has quite the stage presence making for those rare live performances that are a real pleasure and better than the album.
