The RavenChesky label, the first I've had a chance to hear, albeit borrowed. They're right, there is a surprising amount of 3D, depth information in the music be it the obnoxious stick hitter in the back right or the guitarist on the left just about sitting in my lap. Interesting recording technique, but it doesn't sound as natural as I'm accustomed to with other labels that don't attempt this so much. Maybe my speakers are too good for this, for that's what it sounds like. The sound is also rather thin, more so than even my fairly lean speakers usually do, as though the upper midrange and treble was boosted to improve the sense of detail. This could also be an artifact of the recording venue, for it's very obvious that there are several nearby hard surfaces and the reverb caused by the seemingly near empty room gets to be downright distracting, like listening to a performance nearly alone in a gym. At least there aren't analog recording artifacts -- something that's been really bugging me as of late when that distortion and rubbery sound is added to otherwise excellent music.
