I always wondered why tape as an analog source just up and disappeared. I think it was my favorite. still have a technics deck in my garage and I am tempted to take it out and record some cds to tape and fire away.

Tape died out because it couldn't deliver a true frequency range. It just didn't sound as good as the newer alternatives. Tape also is more subject to the effects of age, temperature, humidity, physical damage,... That's my opinion, anyway.
